I would think that Rarity’s magic is far more specialized than Trixie’s. While Trixie likely has a large collection of utility magic, most of Rarity’s magic (with the exception of her gem hunting spell) has been based on mending or finite manipulation.
 
I don’t doubt Rarity is much better at finite control than your average unicorn (her job requires it) but Trixie DID attend the premiere magical academy in the nation.

A little above, perhaps. Though considering what Rarity has pulled over the course of the show, they might also be about the same level.
 
Which isn’t low at all, mind you. Rarity isn’t a weak caster at all herself, she just doesn’t stand out as much compared to powerhouses like Twilight Sparkle or Starlight Glimmer.

That would be a pretty big “not as”. Trixie is comparable more to Rarity, I believe, in terms of actual power. Twilight is off the charts.

Trixie’s biggest flaw is her method. A stage performer should delight and charm the crowd, not belittle and humiliate them. Unless her plan was to entertain via intimidation, I guess.

I guess it comes from how she’s supposed to be a counterpart to Twilight, who’s a prodigy at all things magic. That and Trixie show’s appeared to rely on spectacles and using props, which could be interpreted as lacking actual substance.

But what’s with the fan idea that Trixie’s not good at magic? Remember, in the episode she shows up, we learn that most unicorns can only do a little magic, usually relating to their special talent. The way I see it, Trixie’s a magic specialty unicorn like Twilight, and she’s genuinely a pretty powerful mage - Just not as powerful as she pretended. The difference between her and Twilight was that Trixie was an arrogant, bullying jerk about it and rubbed her “superiority” in everyone’s muzzles.

sure learning complex spells might be handy someday but her true desire is showmanship?
