You’re missing my point, possibly deliberately. You implied that the fact that you’re in the West and know about BDSM meant BDSM was an exclusively Western concept, and therefore inappropriate for anything MLP-based. I demonstrated that that was not true.
Anyway, I’m done.
Wikipedia says that karate was “developed on the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan”. Elsewhere, it says that “The term BDSM is first recorded in a Usenet posting from 1991”. Is either of those claims wrong?
@The Smiling Pony
Who said “allowed”? I just said I was disappointed. As you say, the show’s made its attitude to world building, continuity and other verisimilitude clear; whereas this comic briefly caught me far enough off guard for me to forget my username. I’ll try to keep better self-control in the future.
@Background Pony #555B
Right… tongue in cheek.
Tall order, but much obliged for the image XD
Can this strange drama stop now?
What can you do?
This is based on the show. MLP is full of references to real life Western concepts, landmarks and holidays and other conventions. Nitpicking about BDSM is incredibly pointless and small minded, especially when talking about a simple, tongue in cheek fan comic.
It doesn’t change the context of their relationship… And what? The show is allowed to take liberties with elements it takes from “reality”, but fan work can’t?
I know all about karate and I’m in the West. Does that make karate a product of 21st Century ‘Murrica? No, it does not.
If you dislike Trixie/Maud BSDM, or pony BDSM, or BDSM in general, well and good, but the show - and by extension, anything based on the show, like these comics - is such a grab-bag of cultural concepts that decrying something as “Western” makes as much sense as saying that Pinkie can’t be a baker because horses can’t bake cakes.
It’s not a “small throwaway remark” if it changes the context of their entire relationship, which is the focus of the entire story. That’s what I was trying to illustrate at @Background Pony #2621.
@The Smiling Pony
This isn’t the show.
Dude wtf. They have ecclairs and 10 gallon hat toting sheriffs in the actual show, I think the bridge for grabbing random “real world” elements for whatever purpose was crossed a long time ago.
What the hell kind of a comment is this. “Would you agree this comic was worse if the pony they are speaking to wasn’t a pony but was a dalek?”
People overanalyzing small throwaway remarks is the worst. Go to politics or something if you have this much energy to spare in debating.
No, then that much confusion would be apt.
Would it still be “nitpicking” if Maud had said “feminist BDSM”? Or “I was teaching Trixie how to be a good Christian”?
BDSM is applicable to many situations.
Ahem:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_bondage
I know about it and I’m in the West. It’s an abbreviation for a term in English. Nothing I’ve read about it has made any allusion to non-Western origins or concepts being translated from a different language or cultural background. I’ll admit that I’m far from an expert, though.
Wouldn’t that be splendid? XD
I think that’s an awful lot of nitpicking.
And is BDSM really ‘specifically’ western?
Wow. Talk about an appropriate bg pony number. Your comment was full of shyay!
On another topic, I await the day the other pie sisters get added to this series.
Has the whole thing been imported wholesale into Equestria? How was it developed, and how recently?
Doesn’t Maud’s awareness of BDSM and access to associated knowledge and concepts negate a lot of past and potential angst about her and Trixie’s not understanding or knowing how to deal with their feelings and relationship?
Wasn’t Maud failing BDSM badly earlier when she kept pulling Trixie’s hair despite clear signs of distress just because she hadn’t gathered herself enough to say the safe word?
How does Maud know about BDSM? How does word about it spread in general? There’s no pony Internet; not even television or widespread radio. Are there books about it in the libraries and bookstores Maud goes to for geology books? Are there clubs or community groups in the city? How visible are they?
Did a past partner introduce her to it in a failed attempt to control her abusive tendencies? How well does she understand it? Does she own books about it? Will she try to teach Trixie from them? Are they good, or are they full of bad advice and misinformation exacerbating her problems?
