Really, the whole joke here is that they’re entirely random people Twilight rounded up at last minute to fill the seats. It would’ve be as funny if they weren’t such oddballs. Although I must say I’m kind of disappointed that Bulk didn’t get invited.
Also, I get the idea that Cranky and Celestia must go way back, or he wouldn’t be talking about his nose hair in front of her.
QFT. (And to be honest, I think Bulk would’ve been better for the episode than Derpy. As much as I love her, she really didn’t add anything to the episode herself.)

had this scene only included derpy and vinyl i think i would’ve gone “eh, that’s kinda cheap”, but in my opinion the addition of cranky helped balance out the scene and make it a lot funnier. bear in mind i’m not really against fanservice in mlp at all, mainly because the writers generally handle it well and not ham-fistedly.
