I’m kinda starting to see why people like Trixie so much.
Edited because: My English sucks
Thank you. That was very well written.
“petty inter-girl friendship drama”
Right. Because this doesn’t show how how little Trixie’s grown and changed. She’s obviously tried to move on since Magic Duel but that only went so far - by her own admission, she’s had a lot of trouble actually getting past things.
Obviously I’ll have to make an assumption here but I think it’s a fair one - Trixie spends her time alone. Again, by her own admission Starlight is her first friend. She quite obviously has little experience in dealing with people in a way that isn’t putting them down or otherwise exploiting them and the one chance she gets, she screws it up because it’s all she knows.
And then–then–she has Little Miss Perfect Princess rub her nose in it; “Well, you won. I hope you’re happy!” Followed swiftly by, “Thank you, Princess Twilight, for getting rid of that annoying pony who wanted to be my first friend! I am not sad at all! I definitely don’t feel as if my heart is breaking into a million pieces!” Because from Trixie’s viewpoint, it’s Twilight, once again, lording how she has everything, over her.
Now you can criticise this end part for being too compressed and not giving enough time to properly exploring this part of Trixie’s character but it at least points it out.
Trixie is a complex character, moreso than I can explain. Twilight’s conceit vis-à-vis the original friendship (and later Amending Fences) is that her studiousness led to her being inconsiderate to others because she felt to do so would be to the detriment of her studies. Trixie’s… I’m not sure how to explain it without getting it horribly wrong but I feel like I can still understand the basics of it. She has a fragile ego and letting people get close to her would mean having that challenged, it’d mean being hurt. And it’d hurt because so many other ponies wouldn’t understand what it’s like to try and strive and struggle so hard and to still come up short.
None more so than Twilight, of course, Element of Magic herself. She has everything Trixie doesn’t - friends who love and support her but perhaps most importantly, a confidante in Celestia who can and will reassure her; someone who provides the emotional support she needs. Oh and she’s the most powerful and talented unicorn in Equestria.
And now, finally, finally, she finds a kindred spirit in Starlight, someone who understands what it’s like to just keep ruining your life and to desperately, desperately need that second chance so you can turn things around and make amends. To have supportive friends who can show you what to do without tearing your ego apart.
So with that in mind, her “gotcha” moment feels significantly less petty and more finally sticking it to Twilight that yes, she can match her; she isn’t some abject failure and so it’s less about proving anything to Twilight and proving everything to herself. Twilight forgave her in Magic Duel but again, as Trixie says, you can never trust anyone to really forgive you. So she doesn’t believe she was given that chance and the reactions of others just reinforces that belief. And Twilight’s I-told-you-so? Well to Trixie, that just further proves she was right about not really being forgiven.
Twilight already has everything but that’s not enough, she has to rip the one friend Trixie makes away from her.
I know, I know, I’m reading too deeply into things. And I’m not even a big Trixie fan! But your writing the episode off is what really seems petty.
Also keep in mind that this is Trixie’s first real friendship. To have that glimmer (heh) of hope, then have it snatched away like that must be heartrending.
Well, no, not always.
Heck, even some of the character-driven episodes like ‘Filli Vanilli’ isn’t always about friendship or drama.
That particular one was more about being willing to try new things and overcome stage fright and so on.
Friends were involved, but they were not at all important to the story; The episode would have worked the same, though would have been harder to write, if we did not see a single familiar pony other than Fluttershy.
The closest we got to friendship drama in that episode was Pinkie doing her best to make fluttershy cry, but that doesn’t really count (the episode didn’t treat it like Pinkie was being mean, other than a short ‘Pinkie!’, it was just a means to drive fluttershy’s fears)
Um…EVERY episode is about petty girl friendship drama.
That’s sort of the show’s thing.
Oh my gosh
The Great and Tsundere Trixie
O noes, petty drama, it hurt my head… You do realize this sort of shit actually happens? Also, God forbid the show branch out a bit.
What do you want to watch then? Porn?
what on earth gave you the idea this show would never have any?
I’ve known my best friend for over 17 years now. I’d be heartbroken.
