You know, at a certain point in math, not using a calculator is basically just wasting time… Knowing how to multiply 32124 and 41041 together by hand is important, but it can be done so much faster with the calculator.
 
Also, I’m pretty certain that it is literally impossible to have negative side lengths of triangles. The very idea is absurd… Not to mention how you are dealing with the goddamn Pythagorean Theorem, where everything is squared, thus rendering the fact that you are using negative numbers completely moot.
 
Also, given how they have to be in their fourth year of high school by this point, they should be well beyond the Pythagorean Theorem and at least into pre-calc; considering how Twilight apparently learned everything and was a god-tier student, she should definitely be in at least Calculus. The math they were doing in the Friendship Games, with figuring out the Triangle, was definitely beyond the basic Pythagorean Theorem and used some trigonometry.
 
Actually, scratch that; you only needed Geometry for the problem they solved. Still…

Wwwelll, you can sorta. It might be better described as using the distance formula, which says that the distance along displacement vector (x,y,z) is sqrt(x^2+y2+z^2). Then x, y, and z can be negative and fractional and there are no problems.
