I’m gonna be honest, I’m impressed that My Little Pony has managed to put in these adult references. They don’t really surprise me anymore, because I feel like part of what this show does is defy your expectations, subverting typical kid’s show tropes and whatnot. This is just a small sample of the references that really stuck out to me.

I don’t think that’s an intentional reference. She’s wearing a bowler hat, and doing a slight Kubrick stare. That’s about it.

Until FiM tops The Animaniacs for adult references, I’ll be happy with the adult references but not impressed.

Yes, I’m aware Rocko’s Modern Life went straight over a cliff with it’s references, but I never watched the show (not everyone had cable in the 90s), so it doesn’t count in my mind.

@Masem
I feel like My Little Pony started off as a show primarily for little girls, but then the fandom developed. Lauren Faust herself stated that she was happy about the new fandom, so I think from as early as early Season 1, MLP has kind of been catering to the older fandom, while still remaining a show that little girls could watch. So this puts the fact that the reference to The Shining happened in Season 5, when the show was already in full gear, in a new light.

Well, they could have Pinkie in drag strutting through downtown Baltimare while “The Girl Can’t Help It” plays in the background. That’s probably not the first Pink Flamingos scene that comes to mind for most folks, though :P

I would like to see that. “I never go anywhere without my hypodermic!”

I guess the Trainspotting one could double as a reference to The Exorcist. To be honest, I’m not sure which one that one’s referencing, since both films have scenes of creepy children spider-walking on the ceiling.

I suppose with that instance the only way it could be more obvious was if Pinkie was going into withdraws over something, or had to go toilet diving and there was a whole scene about swimming in the toilet pocket-dimension.

As soon as MLP referenced The Shining, I said to myself “this is it, nothing MLP references could surprise me after that”. I could be wrong, they could reference something totally outrageous like Pink Flamingos, but I don’t think MLP would go that far…
