What’s Trixie good at? Trixie’s good at life. What clear reason does she have to fight the Ursa? None, really. But her ego compels her to meet a challenge like that - despite her (visible) reservation, she stood there and fought that fucking bear.
 
What about the other ponies? Twilight cracks quickly when she encounters a problem she’s not confident she can solve. When something threatened Pinkie’s worldview, she cracked as well. Applejack was a bit of a cunt to her friends in The Last Roundup with no legitimate reason. Fluttershy snapped so hard she attacked Rainbow Dash.
 
No, Trixie’s appeal is that her ego drives her to heroism. After all, what would’ve happened if she hadn’t held off the Ursa as long as she did? From a strictly mental, composure-oriented standpoint, Trixie’s the most capable there is. People (or ponies) like that are rare, but they’re exactly the sort I like most.

The important part to remember is the Ponyville folk seemed to enjoy the show quite a bit, so she was doing something right. Remove Snips & Snails idiocy or Spike’s constant complaining and everything would’ve been just dandy.

Magic is real in Equestria. As for Real Life, people already accept the magic tricks are fake, but that doesn’t stop them from being entertaining. And even though lying may be part of the act, it’s obvious that Trixie was bragging to feed her own ego.

…But stage magic is, in itself, a lie by that logic.
 
Besides, most magicians claim they can do outrageous things anyways.

While you’re true about the house, nobody drove her out of town, she ran on her own because she didn’t want to face the town.
 
While I’m not sure if bragging has to be part of the job, when you get to the point of excessive bragging or even lying you’ve crossed the line.

But that’s part of her profession. It’s not her fault they’re gullible as fuck.
 
Whatever, we can argue in circles but at the end of the day, Trixie is a jerk that got the shortest straw. I don’t know about you, but she hardly deserves to have her home destroyed and be driven out of town for having an ego. Hey, we put up with Dash, don’t we?

Her special talent is being able to do magic tricks, if she couldn’t do a variety of spells there would be a problem. And if the attack of the Ursa Minor is any indication, that might be the case. Maybe she just goes from town to town doing the same tricks and that way she avoids having to learn new ones.
 
And the rest of Ponyville is amused by everything, they also loved a dress Rarity made. The mane 6 simply criticized her attitude and doubted her talent. And I don’t know about you, but I’d go to a magic show to be surprised, not to witness someone’s ego trip.

As far as F&F goes, I think AJ was just a luddite. That episode to me had a lot of “John Henry” overtones, though AJ didn’t die at the end of the moral since she accepted her friends’ help (which I think is the unsaid development/plotline there, AJ being less stubborn than usual)

Where Flim and Flam or Iron Will making an honest living, in your opinion? Personally, I think that Flim and Flam were like Trixie, but at least they never threatened a whole town with its destruction. Iron Will literally was just doing his job, if anything Fluttershy was at fault for improving and never giving him money.
 
The rest of the ponies were having fun because they’re the type of schmucks that makes Trixie’s job possible. Notice how Trixie didn’t mention Canterlot as a place on her tour?

Well, not quite honest, but the jackassery-to-punishment ratio is severely tilted to the punishment side.
 
As for talent: my theory is magic gear. She’s got a magic wand on her flank. She just does off-talent work a lot due to a belief that something anyone can do/use can’t be defined as a “special talent”.

Trixie has shown herself to be farm more talented than the average unicorn, if talent = number of spells learned able to be used. As powerful as Twilight? Hell no, but give credit where credit is due.
 
And the whole blatant lies thing… She’s a stage performer, a stage magician to be exact. People go watch them for the sole purpose of being fooled. Because people like being razzle-dazzled. The rest of the audience loved it, Twilight and her friends just live under a rock.
 
Trixie is by no means a swell person, but she’s hardly a criminal. She was just making an honest living.

Let’s see, she blatantly lied to gain fame, took advantage of the naivety of two colts, knew that she had no talent in what she said she did, and thought all of her audiences were idiots who would fall for her spectacle. Seems to be the first time she was run out of town, so it says something about the intelligence of the towns she went to.
