As Cadance she cries and acts hurt when challenged. When her identity is revealed before her army could break through she keeps everypony occupied with a long speech about her dominance.
She expressed surprise when she defeated Celestia so Celestia did the right thing attacking early before her army broke through but the Queen had grown to strong by then.
I think her confidence was feigned and that long drawn out speech not bad writing but Chrysalis trying to keep everypony in line until her army got through.
