Description

If you’re friends with someone long enough, certain traditions will create themselves. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are, or what you like. They’ll come.
Dinky Hooves and Pipsqueak were no different. Having known each other nearly as long as either could remember (which admittedly wasn’t long), They had plenty of time to let their private rituals flourish. Perhaps none was more sacred - or more disorganized - than who got the bed at a sleepover. While most foals had a set stance on who got to sleep where depending on who was hosting it, Pip and Dinky had a rather unorthodox method of solving that dilemma:
They fought for it.
Oh, they didn’t fight themselves of course. No, they had champions. Both had a small force of action figures, dolls, plushies, and other toys they would bring along, and they would duel it out. This could go on for one or two rounds, to several hours worth of rematches and tournament-style ranking fights, depending on how tired they were (or if their moms heard them).
Tonight was shaping up to be a fierce war. Pip had already brought out his big guns, and Dinky had to weigh her options. She didn’t have much time to plan before heading over, basically grabbing whoever she could stuff in her bag. She was regretting not grabbing Optimus now…
”… Come on, a gunstick could totally cut through ceramite! You saw what it did to the cybermen!”
“Space Marines face way heavier fire than just a laser! Lasers are nothing to him!”
“Yeah but Dalek lasers are really powerful.”
“They can be blocked by a trashcan!”
“No they can’t!”
“Yes they can!”
“No they-”
A threatening pounding on the stairs shut the debate down, and the two combatants dove for the lights. Perhaps they could call it a draw, just this once…
A quick personal pic just because the past few days have been insanely hectic, and because I really wanted to do something with Pipsqueak lately.
I don’t know why this turned out so grainy. Something in the scene made my computer very upset, and I have no idea why. All I know is, this is the result of this:

You’d think after that it would turn out a little prettier.

Yeah, Iray can be so unbelievably finicky. I’ve had times where just shifting the camera to a different angle has shaved off half an hour of render time. So, the problem could very well be the angle of lights and shadows, and what the studio has to do to render it. I don’t know, though… Half the time I’m convinced Iray has a mind of its own and a fickle sense of humor.

That’t the thing. This only has four light sources (including Puppet’s eyes) plus the environment map. Lightwise, this scene is no more complicated than almost every other iray scene I’ve made. Hell, even http://theowlgoesmoo.deviantart.com/art/Fury-of-the-Sun-610782477 took way less time than this did, and that’s loads more complicated texture and lightwise. I can’t figure out what made this so ridiculously long to do. Hell, I even changed the room they were in because that particular set had some unusual material settings. It helped a little bit but not much. It’s annoying, really.

All the same, your help is very much appreciated. I’m still a massive newbie to how Iray works, so anything I can learn is helpful.

From what I’ve experienced with DAZ studio, indoor scenes with multiple added light sources (Particularly Iray-based) tend to cause atrocious graininess. Not like I’m an expert, but that’s what I’ve noticed. What might work (and that I do, anyway), is to ramp up the settings in the Progressive Tab. In particular, set Render Time to 0. This completely removes the time limit DAZ will impose on a render, so it will just keep going until it is absolutely finished, even if that takes days.
