I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE TERM WHEN IT WAS USED TO DESCRIBE ETHNICITY. How many goddamn times do I have to repeat myself? It’s clear indication even in the source of this image, that some people believe “African American” is the politically correct term to describe a black person’s background. Why the hell do you care about whether I said Asian American isn’t a very commonly used word anyway?

At first it was people don’t say Asian American, now VNagato is saying it’s rare. In my personal experience it may be less common but no where near rare. The two of you may hear it less often than me, that doesn’t change anything here. I still run into it more often than rarely.

It definitely is less common than African-American though (still fffkin’ despise these terms), and he has a solid point in that it tends to be used more often for actual first or second generation immigrants rather than “every-gorram-body of any Asian descent” the way anyone dark enough to be considered Black gets tagged as “African” even if their families have been in the US for four hundred years or more.

Talking about ethnicity here, people use the term, African American as is it’s part of your background. Being American is a nationality. When people talk about ethnicity, I always hear “African American” as the alternative to Black, while Asian or European is just that.  
People rarely call anyone else other than those of African backgrounds, a need to put “American” afterwards. You get my point?

Understood your point, but Asian American or European American aren’t terms that are thrown around everywhere as if it was part of your ethnicity, like African American.

I am all behind burning the idiotic concept of Hyphenated-Americanism out of the American English language, since it is primarily used by both well-meaning people and assholes as a way of otherizing and exoticizing ordinary people of different ethnic backgrounds– and because no damn body would ever think to call me “German-American”, even though my families have been in the US a lot less longer than most Black people’s families have– I’m just saying that “Asian American” is not in general anywhere near as rare as your personal experience has made it out to be.
 
“African American” is kinda different from the others, though, given the sort of terms it’s largely replaced in common usage.

I see people calling them African American to their face, and black people who do refer to themselves as such. I’ve been called Asian before, it’s not insulting or rude, that’s my ethnicity, what doesn’t make sense is the need to add American afterwards. American is not a goddamn ethnicity, it’s a nationality (unless First Nations’ descent, but majority of Americans aren’t).  
There’s this Korean singer, whose half-African and half-Korean, and everyone calls her African American. Her African-American father left her mother before she was born, she is not a citizen of the USA, which means that she is not African American.  
People use African American as if it is the correct to describe someone’s background/ethnicity/race, when really, it’s not.

There are… things that people won’t say to your face. Trust me on this, I am a Clean Cut White Man Who Owns Guns And Drives A Pickup Truck, there are utter assholes out there who automatically mistake anyone who looks like them for someone who is “on their side” and will casually talk the kind of shit about someone who just walked by that really makes a decent person want to flense them. Sometimes those things they say are terms that would be perfectly reasonable if devoid of context– like “Native American”, or “female”– but are delivered with a tone of voice and expression of face that absolutely cries out for a fist.
 
You’re right that “Asian American” is less common than “African American”– both of which I think are stupid ass unhelpful terms, by the way– but it is definitely a standard part of the American English lexicon, and if nobody has said it at you personally it’s almost certainly because they were trying unnecessarily hard to not be _~offensive~, whether for good or for ill.
