I think it’s more about people being ‘shocked’ that our precious little ponies would DARE to eat the ‘flesh’ of another sentient being. We seem to justify eating meat as ‘They aren’t intelligent creatures and therefore it isn’t ‘wrong’ to eat them’, but if some creature shows more ‘intelligence’ then we say ‘oh no, you can’t eat them, the can think similarly to us’. Now… I eat meat.. a LOT and it’s just a thing now, but THAT seems to be the thought process. That is why the whole ‘Hamburger’ thing in the first EG movie was such a big deal. They SAID it was Soy Burgers, but we can call BS on that if we want and say they didn’t consider that when the movie came out. You know how it is…

Meat is not really a problem to ponies. There are recorded instances of equines eating meat (mostly taking a chunk out of dead birds due to nutritional deficiencies) and even records of soldiers feeding warhorses with meat (often from fallen enemies) to “make them bloodthirsty”. It might not be part of the standard pony diet, but it is not impossible for them to eat it, just like with cats and dogs that eat fruit (One of my cats used to love watermelon, such a nigga that little fella) . Now imagine the shock if she actually liked it.
