Starburst: Since when could princesses take days off?
Twilight: Since forever. Everypony needs a break every once in a while. Plus, I don’t think it’d be too much trouble if one out of four princesses decided to take one day off.
Starburst: Ah. Well. I’m actually kinda working out all day today. Sooooo… maybe another time?

Starburst: Uhhh, you can hang out with Nighty then right? He likes books and stuff like you.
Twilight: R-right but me and Night Light spend a lot of time together already. I wanted to spend the day with you specifically. I want to spend time with my daughter.

To be fair, Star isn’t the only one to blame considering Twilight was somewhat (unintentionally) neglectful to her, mainly because she spent more time tutoring Fluttershy’s daughter Annie (hence the “She might as well be your daughter” quip) or Night Light Jr. to the point where Star felt like she could only really connect with her father.
And usually when she DID try to spend time with her the response was usually “Next time.”…
See where I’m coming from?
I’m actually pretty sure the naming convention was intentional from the get go. These characters are not THAT old, they were designed post season 3, at the earliest. We already had the fandom name for Night Light by then.

Thank You! That was clear and informative. I am not aware of the story at all.
I think what originally happened was that Kilala wanted to name Twi’s younger son “Night Light”, only to find out later that Twi’s father’s fanon name was also Night Light, so she tacked a “Jr.” at the end, so it would look like he’s named after his grandfather.
Of course, most people–and ponies, in-universe–just call the colt “Nighty.”
The worst part is when the child just finds the parents annoying. Not by any fault of the parents usually! There is a time when children want to go out and explore the world. They don’t know about how much just a day spent with their parent can mean to said parent. They usually end up regretting it later on in life.
