Description
Card Description:
Hard working, diligent, practical, and determined, the Knight of Earth (Pence or Coins in a normal Tarot deck) represents someone who is willing to stand their ground no matter the cost, and who will steadfastly deliver on their promises.With a never give up attitude, they can be difficult to work with, but like a plow horse they will get the job done, one step after the next, pushing forward long after everyone else has fallen behind.Reversed, and the determination becomes stubbornness, the convictions turn to overbearing traditions, and the practicality is thrown out the window as sloppiness and repetitive habitual patterns take over.Upright, and this knight is your best friend in business or any kind of endeavor that requires hard work and hard play.
About this deck and these drawings:
Some folks have mentioned that this looks like it was heavily referenced at best, or an outright trace at worse - and for these cards that’s actually good news.
Although I would like something of my own hand to be visible throughout the deck, with the court cards its important that I get the designs and illustrations as show-like as possible (although, for myself, I’m going to make the legs longer, because Sailor Moon.)
So, especially with the court cards, I’m referencing the source as hard as I can; Lauren Faust’s own original character sketches and the information in the Art Is Magic and The Art Of Equestria books.
For this image, I would ideally like to capture the energy and freedom of Lauren’s amazing character designs and sketches, while bringing in some of the uniformity and precision that Flash brings to the show. The pose I picked for this card is from Lauren’s show bible sketches:

I feel like I’m getting closer, but I may need to redo this drawing four or five more times until I get finished pencils that have the “show look” that I really want for this deck, while retain Lauren’s open and confident line.
I know I’ll never get 100% to a “Show Accurate Look”, because this is going to be a hand inked and colored deck and it will never match what people are doing in Flash. And as much as I’d like to be able to replicate Lauren’s amazing line, I draw like me - so something in the ballpark I think is all I’m ever going to be able to get.
The final goal is a presentation to Hasbro, either to have them option the deck and the accompanying book, or to get a referral to one of the third party licensees like We Love Fine, or for a license to produce and sell the deck myself.

That Is why I came here. @Neko Majin C
I prefer the futurama version.
Yeah, bidding… Heheh… ‘cause I totally wasn’t imagining a mission-impossible type break and entry with needlessly complex/advanced gadgets and everything to swipe a sketch of Applejack just to scan it at higher resolution and re-upload it for a get. Dun-dun dun dun dun-dun dun dun…
All those books though. I approve.
God I hate living in this tiny apartment for college when I’ve got this wonderful home out-of-state with huge shelves of books and so much more peace and quiet and room that’s all mine and… Yeah.
Funny, though, apparently this apartment has the exact same cost as db… Maybe I should start living on db instead. Then I’d constantly be surrounded by pones :q
@Solitude
That video was beautiful.

Or, we could just replace this upload’s file. Takes only about 20 seconds to do.
@Ciaran
The last I heard, the site costs about $400/month to operate in entirety (server, cdn, backups, etc). This is/was listed on the donations page.
Edited because: They changed that number at some point
Let’s start bidding on having your own profile substituted as the uploader for this image at … uhm … a new donation to the site which is enough to fund the entire Derpibooru infrastructure including servers and bandwidth for one year? I’ll even throw in the paper original! :)
Ha! Ha! Just serious!
Caveats:
1 _That’s just US$ 4,800 per @Joey
2 I haven’t asked anyone else if this is ok, and I don’t have the button to actually make this happen, but that’s a bridge we can burn when we cross it, right?

Thanks :)

It’s a great way to discover exoplanets. Use a crappy phone camera, take a picture of the night sky, keep zooming and enhancing on a star and boom! Find a planet, zoom in on the life there, do geological and xenobiological studies…
|| seriously, though, it’s so annoying how common the “zoom enhance” thing is on tv and in movies||
Or I can just zoom and enhance XD
|| Did that to a picture of Earth once. Just spawned many terabytes of data and found a secret shrine in China ||
Duplicates would get merged into the original, the only way to destroy this one is to upload the same image but in a higher resolution or say something like a png instead of a jpg (assuming that the image in question was indeed a higher quality version and not just a silly scaled up version or anything).
What would’ve happened if this was a dupe of something else? Imagine, a fine get, completely gone forever… :p
(Or what’d be really epic is if every 1, 12, 123, 1234, 12345, 123456, 1234567 etc. was the SAME image! O: x-files theme)
* Both 100% legit gets, LemonDrop, so duck off…
Thank you :) Right now I think once I get off of paper and pencil and into an .svg things will start to pop, so I’m crawling through the learning curves for some vectoring apps to see which one is the least like Illustrator :)
Hmm, I think a lot of the deviations look fine. The eyes aren’t exactly show style, but still work on their own. And the rest mostly seem like small changes that fit with the image. Although I guess I’ve never been much for trying to get close to show style, so we might be thinking in different directions.
The only thing I’d recommend would be to try and clean up some of the line work (erasing some of the sketch lines), that way you could see the characters a bit more clearly. This might help make your line work seem more confident.
Oh, yes - I absolutely had something very much like that image in front of me while I was drawing.
But I suspect both I and that artist were referencing something else - something more primal and seminal to the world of ponies: Lauren Faust’s own character sketches:

My minor in college was cartography, but that was back in the 70’s which basically meant 4 solid years of “Now we’re going to make you a human photocopier”. Here’s a photograph from an airplane, turn that into a plat map line drawing. Didn’t mean to draw that bump? No problem - God meant there to be a hill there.
Sometimes that’s good, sometimes that’s bad. Like, trying to get some of myself into what I draw is sometimes a challenge, and everything always reminds me of “That’s Fujishima’s hair” or “That’s Shirow’s butt”. But much as possible, I want the court cards to be as much on-character as possible, so I’m hoping all the other court cards are going to look like show assets, too, right down to the “characteristic” poses that define their personality:
I have been sending feelers into Hasbro for how to approach them with the designs, and right now it seems that the more on-design I am with the show, the better. At some point, it might just be that I hand them concepts and they use show assets, or maybe they’ll tell me to cut it out because “Tarot isn’t for kids” and I’ll have to talk with the WeLoveFine folks or something.
So, thank you, I’ll take it as a compliment that I got so close to the show pose. :)
@Exedrus
Thank you for the comparison - I can see need to work on doing Lauren’s apples more. Her leaves are, like - perfect. And mine are just a squiggle :(
I fucked up the tail again, too. Lauren’s tails are so smooth - and her line work so confident. Of course, it’s all vectored at the point it’s in the show, but even on her concept work and sketches she has so much energy in her line, and mine looks flat by comparison.
And the eyes - I just can’t draw show eyes yet :( I might have to do a sketchbook of just those eyes.
Back to the drawing board for more practice.

Hmm, it appears to be a heavy reference then
What a weird thing to get a get with
It’s clearly based off of it in any case.
Hmmm, the body is in about the same position, but I’m seeing lots of deviations from that image (around the hat/mane/tail/pupils):
