“they do”
That’s definitely possible.
My interpretation was that it was still her plan the whole time, and in her single-minded focus on getting one over on Twilight, it was only right when she said it (and saw that she hurt Starlight) that she realized that she had actually become real friends with Starlight, similar to Discord’s realization at the end of Keep Calm and Flutter On.

Fair enough. I thought Trixie wasn’t up to no good though. Trixie may have originally intended to get back at Twilight, but that quickly changed during the scene where Trixie was unpacking her wagon and Starlight was willing to help out. It was only when Trixie let her ego get the best of her was when she admitted her original intentions.
They weren’t friends at the spa, though, merely two conversation partners. The way Trixie blurted it out, it’s pretty evident that it was her original purpose for getting close to Starlight, as it’s much too complex of an insult to blurt out without having thought of it beforehand, and completely in line with how smug and passive-aggressive she was towards Twilight as the castle.
She might not have even realized that she had actually grown to appreciate Starlight as a friend until after she said that to Twilight.

Signs of her feeling insecure about living up to her title also showed up in The Hooffields and the Mccolts, when it caused her to overcompensate with preparations, and is also likely the deeper reason she was so disappointed at not being chosen by the map two times in a row in season 5.
Was she, though? Twilight thought Trixie only became friends with Starlight to get back at her, but this was not the case. Trixie actually became friends with Starlight because she finally found that one person she could relate to. Sure, Trixie said that she became friends with Starlight to get even with Twilight, but she said that without thinking. Her ego got the best of her when she said that. She actually originally became friends with Starlight because she finally found someone who had something in common with her and not because she was Twilight’s pupil, which she didn’t know at the time she met Starlight at the spa.

Never mind that she turned out to be right. Trixie was indeed up to no good.

Despite how much of a… jerk Discord was during that episode, he really did help her. Twilight was obviously hurting from feeling totally left out, and the fact that she believed she couldn’t allow herself to admit that pain made things much worse. “My pain doesn’t matter, because princesses can’t have negative feelings.”
To add to this, another reason Twilight was acting the way she was in the episode is because she thought Trixie was up to no good. Sure, Trixie apologized to Twilight in Magic Duel, but why shouldn’t Twilight expect Trixie not being up to her usual tricks?

Twilight’s persona is rather easy to exploit, surprised no character other than Discord and Tirek (who got it from Discord) have really exploited it.
Hm. I never really thought about it that way. Makes sense.
I don’t think it was intentional ego that led her to act like that. As I said, it was perfectionism. She knows how she thinks princesses SHOULD be, and let the title define her, and thought she couldn’t be jealous because the princess title can’t allow for jealousy. Her thought process wasn’t “I can’t feel jealous because I’m better than everyone else. It was “If I feel jealous then I’m a failure.”
One still implies the other but that wasn’t how she thought of it.

Oh nonono, you misunderstand. I like that she has flaws, I just hate how she constantly denied it as if she felt herself some kind of ascended goddess. Which in hindsight makes sense as far as both her ascension to alicorn and her coronation, to boot.

You don’t want Twi to have flaws? I thought at least they were doing something with her princessness. Rather than it automaticall making her better and acting as a good thing.
Hated that, honestly. But, at one point I did thought Discord planned something drastic XD Guess the only thing he did was not let Twilight know about the fun the group was having.
Was nice to see Discord not be treated like syay ever since the prior episodes of Season 5.
Exactly. People hate what about Discord, but I can’t totally hate it because it shows that being a princess may have caused some kind of issues within Twilight. She thought she was physically incapable of having negative emotions, because of the idea of a princess she built for herself in her head. It’s her established perfectionism twisted to point at herself to the nth degree.
Like when she wasn’t jealous of her friends having fun with Discord?
I was happy she was being flawed. I like it when “Prin-cess” (motions head like Trixie) Twilight shows that she still has issues and the episode is aware of it.
Twilight wasn’t doing it for me, honestly, but at least she made up for it in the end.
DO YOU WANT TO GO TO WAR TRIXIE!? Cuz we could go to war.
