Holy shit Pinkie is monstrously ugly. For some reason people who try to be all different when drawing humanizations make her extremely repulsive more often than the rest of them. Weird. Official designs are freaking masterpieces of art compared to something like this. Though even without a comparison I think they’re good.

Indeed, not to mention black people have voiced white characters to, or other races.
(Not to mention Tara Strong is Jewish.)

Heck in the original TMNT cartoon, Shredder (an Asian/Japanese man) was voiced by James “Uncle Phil” Avery. In the new Nick series, he’s also voiced by a black guy to, Kevin Michael Richardson. Both were great Shredders BTW.
(Sadly, James Avery passed away recently…) :(

Do you know how many black people are voiced by white people? Seriously, the voice actor doesn’t matter AT ALL.

And ironically, people wonder why they didn’t use “real skin colors” in E.G.
Personally, if I were to draw humanizations, I would’ve just given ‘em their pony colors anyways. (I actually had that idea before E.G. came out. Some fanartists have done that prior to. So it’s not entirely a “new” thing.)

This is pretty much it. Artists can draw the characters however they want. I’m just sick of seeing “Black Fluttershy!? WTF?” or “THEY’RE ALL WHITE WHERE’S THE DIVERSITY?” on every freaking humanization.

That right there is exactly why, after an initial shock, I was perfectly fine with EQG giving the characters their MLP fur colours. They probably did it to avoid just this sort of bullshit.

Yeah, I really don’t get all the “white guilt” out there. I think white people sometimes focus more on race then the “minorities” in America do. “Oh this guy is black! I better be extra nice to him, so I don’t seem racist!”

Reminds me of George Carlin’s joke about guilty white liberals. (Warning: Cussing.)

People have the right to complain about anything they want. Whether those complaints are valid is another story. In the case of “ethnic humanizations”, I’m on the fence re validity.

That said, I have a hard time understanding how anyone can “see [pony] as [race]” at all. Anyone who does is probably themselves guilty of racial stereotyping. Drawing Fluttershy as a Muslim or Rarity as Black based on their respective personalities is horrendously stereotypical (Dashie as a midget Mexican slightly less so), even if the artist doesn’t see it.

“But,” you say, “Isn’t depicting them as White just as stereotyping?” No it’s not, because, at least in North America and Europe (the former being where the show is made and most of the fans come from and the latter having a disproportionate share of the fan-artists), “White” is “default”. It may not be an ideal situation, but it is reality.

Do I even need to point out that every single voice actor in the show (except Zecora’s VA) is White? No? Good.

As Lord Niggertron is always quick to note, most of these artists who humanize characters as Black don’t know how to do it. The chosen skin colour tends to clash horribly with either the hair colour or the clothes (or both). Dashie above is a great example. So is Fluttershy. Twilight actually looks okay; I’m not gonna complain about her. In addition, non-Europeans have noticeably different facial structures than Europeans, something that’s usually either ignored or, more rarely, exaggerated to the point of offensiveness.

Finally, I want to put forth my own theory that 99% of the fan-artists who humanize MLP characters as vastly different ethnicities are probably White Americans who, due to the USA’s deplorable racial history, are subconsciously terrified of being seen as racist, and in reacting, go too far the other way.

In the USA, the past 45 years have seen the majority of live-action kids shows be some sort of “rainbow coalition” where everyone is represented, regardless of whether or not that would happen in reality (my own experience says not). This is best demonstrated in the “After-School Specials” of the 80’s and 90’s where it was pretty much a requirement that every traditionally-disenfranchised group had at least one representative… plus a kid in a wheelchair who was probably, ironically, the most athletic of the bunch.

TL;DR - Black Rainbow Dash looks like shit, Brown Fluttershy looks like shit, White Pinkie Pie looks like double the shit, Black Twilight look fine, and racial diversity for the sake of racial diversity is stupid and is itself kind of offensive.

My question is if every character is coloured to look human why is pinkie pie pink and rarity albino pink. Besides that it is pretty good

@Krek and @Beau Skunky basically sum up any issues I have with “ethnic” humanizations. I have no problem if an artist makes Twilight Indian or whatever, but if you’re going to draw the characters as having a certain ethnicity do it because you see them as being that ethnicity not because “Oh, I need to be diverse so I’m going to make one of them black”.

Also, I just want to point out that while complaining about characters being drawn as non-white ethnicities is stupid, it’s just as stupid to complain when an artist chooses to draw the characters as Caucasian. If they see the characters that way, it’s their right to draw it that way without people complaining about it.

@Krek
That’s like that one story where the graphic designer found out diversity meant four black ladies.

Also, I’d like to point out that by adding a person of a different ethnicity to a group to try and avoid being called racist, you will only draw more attention to that fact that you’ve added a person of a different ethnicity to a group to try and avoid being called a racist.

Not bad designs, though Pinkie’s face needs to be cuter. I like the braces, and chubbyness though, which makes her a bit adorkable.

@CloSeph
You have a point, it might be people’s way of being “politically-correct,” either that, or they just want some ethnical diversity.
I also think they want to break “racial stereotypes” with Twilight by making her black, or something “unexpected.” (There are black nerds & bookworms out there.)
Though, admittedly it is getting a bit overdone for her to the point where it’s getting more surprising to see somebody make her white/caucasian honestly.

Though, how come we never see them do something like make Rarity “Asian,” or say Dashie “Hispanic?” Why do they only use “black & white” races usually in these group pics? (Granted Fluttershy looks a li’l tanner here. So she might be “Indian” or something.)

Still, I think saying all 6 of them can’t be white is no more “racist” then saying they can’t be drawn as a certain race. The artist can draw them however they want.
Though, admittedly the “ethnic diversity” in some pics feel “forced” sometimes.

All these issues are actually why I’m thankful they went with their “pony colors” for their official humanizations in E.G.

Okay looking at it in a good mood now.

The only ones I really like are Twilight and Applejack.

Though Twilight I’m iffy on, cause whenever she’s black the colors usually clash. And they come close here.

Rainbow’s colors do clash horribly with that skin tone.
