With three entire seasons between season 2 and season 6, they could’ve easily revisited the changelings and revised their design before most fans got too attached to the old design and left fans with some time to grow accustomed to the new one before the show ended.  
But, personally, I think that the last season was a bit too late into the show’s lifespan to be pulling something like this.

Yes it does, show had changelings born from eggs, not some lolrandumb origin story being copy of radioactive mutant cliche. Thankfully, S6 sent the whole OC garbage the comic writers pinned on changelings straight to non-canon bin.

The changelings in general are not that bad, once you get used to how dang BRIGHT they are. The stag (beetle) horns on Thorax are a bit much.

Okay; what’s the concensus on King Thorax and the new look of the changelings? Yay or nay?  
I kinda like them but the colors clash a bit sometimes.

The other changelings, with Thorax as both a social and magical catalyst. Imagine if there were a way to polarize light such that it was brighter when reflected, then shine that light in a hall of mirrors.

They do feed on positive emotional effect, but if they can get ponies to feel friendly towards them themselves—the changeling, not the disguise—it’s a lot more nutritious than stealing love meant for others.
 
And apparently abandoning the desire for love allows them to escape Maya become Homestuck trolls generate a virtuous cycle of infinite emotional energy.

think what rainbicorn said is accurate. would like to add that they were likely under some sort of curse……… it all has the implications of a curse after all. endless hunger for love……. liekly this manifests more emotionally than ‘need cupcakes’ hunger. their withered apeparnce. thorax had more rsistance but he also had short episodes of aggression.  
i think we could at least presume his transformation had more ot do with living near the crystal ponesi and the heart, maybe it eroded the curse. and it spread to ther other changelings.
 
however the curse is not gone. chrysalis still has it, unable to overcome it. though you could tell she had temptation.

On the flipside with positive energy they become angelic ethereal beings

So lemme get this straight…Changelings feed on love, but it turns out they actually DON’T need to feed on love, and when they feed on love it makes them buglike abominations, but when they GIVE all their love they somehow DON’T get uglier and instead turn into benevolent buglike non-abominations of which their leader apparently gets stag beetle horns on his head.
