In Lauren Faust’s very original ideas it was going to be Queen Celestia and Princess Luna so I’m guessing Luna was originally supposed to come off as noticeably younger then her sister. Then the idea got scrapped so I guess they felt making her more Celestia like would drive the new idea of them co-ruling as equals home a little better.

Actually, it makes me wonder what Celestia would look like “depowered.” The same as Luna in these pictures except she has a white body with pink mane and tail (and the solar cutie mark, of course)?

This is Luna’s “depowered” form. Which makes you wonder if her Season 2+ form is actually an illusion she puts on to appear older than she really is.
