@Background Pony #8776: Considering what this picture is based off of, it makes sense that Twilight would smile. What mother wouldn’t want to see her child alive? Even if said child is adopted?
 
With that said, I have my own gripes with this picture. But it’s not with the fact that Twilight is smiling. It’s with how Nightmare Resurgence looks in this picture.
