Actually serves a happy ending in this case.
 
Holiday special, Twilight and Spike are snowed in at the Canterlot train station and can’t make it to their friends’ Hearthswarming back in Ponyville. They pass the time with hot cocoa and childrens’ books sold by a vendor (the only other pony at the station). He’s not missing anything by being snowed in; the only person he has at home is his fish.
 
Cue a panel where we see the fish looking sad in its bowl with a tiny present. :(
 
In the end (after we go through a couple parodies of traditional Christmas stories, via the books Twilight and Spike are reading), the Mane 5 show up! It seems they went on an arduous quest through the snow and ice to get to Twilight (during which they lost Big Mac down a chasm - “He’ll be fine,” says Rainbow Dash.)
 
So everyone is together and happy, and even the poor sad fish gets to be with its owner thanks to Pinkie’s… interesting behavior.
