I don’t remember Lauren saying anything like that but I’ll research it if it does exist. But I did kind of realized the later seasons of MLP tried to introduce really good male characters other than Spike. I’m not sure if they were planning 50% screen time but by introducing characters like Sunburst and Quibble, we saw very competent male characters. Then there’s the fluff stuff. Double Diamond, Party Favor, Sugar Belle and Night Glider showed girls can be good friends with boys and that boys aren’t just for romance or marriage. I’m looking at you Shining Armor. They did this again with Vapor Trail and Sky Stinger. And then Discord being befriended by Fluttershy.
 
After researching 2 of Sunburst’s spells related to Somnambula, I found something about the concept of Big Brother ponies and how MLP has a bad track record of showing male characters working with female characters on equal footing. I would have just said its an 80’s cartoon and is outdated but then I grew up watching He-Man, She-Ra, Thundercats and Silverhawks.

Well, any lesbian ship is inherently unlikely due to both characters having to be lesbian in order for it to work but there are so many female characters and practically no interesting males so people like to ship all the girls who are friends with each other.

There’s no wrong way to fantasize but I always found it funny how the fandom interprets friendship on this show as romance. If they’re standing beside each other, they must be bumping uglies.
 
I myself ship Starlight with that guy that caused her to do morally questionable things, namely Sunburst. Maybe its because there’s a lot of room to maneuver with that pair rarely having any screen time together coupled with the idea that they’re clearly made from the ground up for each other like Cadence and Shining Armor. It also helps that Star and Sun are mentioned spending time together not just from other Hasbro media but from people like Jim Miller and Mike Vogel as well.
