I didn’t know about the project to bring the radio plays to actual episodes. Given that the 50th anniversary has come and gone, have they been released, still in production, or stalled? The Kickstarter page doesn’t seem to have much info on how to obtain them now the pledge period is over, and now that I know they exist, I want them.

I’m going to be a big nerd here and point out that the name of ‘The Hood’ was actually canonised in the shows original run, just before the original broadcast back in 1965.

Some months before ‘Trapped in the Sky’ aired, an LP record was released called ‘Introducing Thunderbirds’, containing a 20 minute radio play detailing Lady Penelope and Parker’s first visit to Tracy island, giving background details to the series and characters as they go. At one point, Jeff does refer to The Hood by name, though only briefly. Granted, some people might not accept it since it was never originally made into a tv episode, but Gerry and Sylvia Anderson were quite meticulous with making sure that themes and backstory that couldn’t be explained on screen was explained through any accompanying media. A similar thing had been done for Stingray, with an audio episode going into the backstory for Marina, and why she can’t speak.

This short audio episode (Along with two other radio play episodes ‘The Abominable Snowman’ and “The Stately Homes Robberies’) were actually made into official episodes using the original Supermarionation techniques a couple of years ago as part of the shows 50th anniversary. I think you’ll agree the lengths they’ve gone to to make them look authentic are fantastic, even going as far as to filming them in the (Now demolished!) original studio on the Slough Trading Estate!

Not a Llama - Happy April Fools Day!

Watching Thunderbirds reruns when they aired as a kid was like love at first sight. Probably when I first fell in love with retro sci fi aesthetics as well.

Honestly I was never a big fan of Thunderbirds but I do love how creative they where with it because of the limits involved.
I like some of the shows using other methed as well, like Pili(you might know it better by the edited dub Wulin Warriors) and the newer show Thunderbolt Fantasy.

It’s not the 2004 movie, though that did do one good thing for the franchise - it canonised The Hood’s name. He is never actually named as such during any of the original show’s run. The rest of that movie was garbage though.

I’ve watched the remake show, Thunderbirds are go. It’s good, with a nice balance between recreating the original and pushing ahead with new ideas. Plenty of nods to the original show, like having a couple of original VA’s making appearances, and one episode having an almost shot for shot remake of the original fireflash crashlanding scene from the 1960’s pilot ep, right down to the music before that attempt fails and they have to improvise a second method to land the plane.

I like how they were able to update the machine designs to accommodate the new technological vision of 2060 while retaining the core look of each, and the CGI rigs mean a far greater range of actions, but I miss the original supermarionation. The limits on that meant the animators and puppeteers had to get creative. And it paid off, with the series still having a loyal fan base 53 years after it first aired.
