To a greater or lesser degree, where the show contradicts them (and it generally does), I would day so. Sadly even that sort of hedging statement tends to bring out the “my definition of the word from the magical dictionary in my head is more real than reality” crowd.

Not according to this EQD Article. “Apparently, the main ones were designed by DHX, but similar to the movie, they decided to let IDW reveal them.” Though some characters not designed by DHX might get cameos

So does that mean that Celestia’s worlds-ending booty call, Twilight refusing to help her friends as they’re getting beaten to death by bulls, and the Humane Five instantly not trusting Sunset after a few posts on MySpace not canon?

These characters are not strictly comic characters though. They are characters created for the show that the comics got to use first that’s all.
Personally, while I don’t really have an opinion on the comics themselves, I’m kinda iffy on the prospect of comic characters crossing over into the show.
Except Tibbles. Tibbles needs to be a part of the show. Even if it’s just in silent background cameo gags when Luna appears in an episode.

Legends of magic are. From staff statements it’s pretty clear they’re being held to a much tighter leash than prior comics. They also seem to be abrogating large chunks of older comics canon as well. Could be interesting.
