Thy dumped it on twilight, spike, AND starlight and NONE of them did the right thing.

Not gonna deny that. They are quite stubborn.
The yaks declare war if you so much as sneeze, its like teatime for them.
Probably why they’re a single village now give their lack of magic or any real notable military might, they probably have picked fights with stronger civilizations to the point of near extinction.
But Twilight IS that bad. She failed every single aspect of the Yak greetings so badly, they declared war on equestria. Only Pinkie realized what was needed to quell the Yaks and earn their friendship.
Twilight hasn’t exactly had a chance at being a dignitary since then. Spike was the one who became friends with Ember, which lead to peace, and Spike also was the one who gave Thorax a chance. Celestia herself addressed Thoax when he was revealed as King, leaving Twilight out of he loop on all of the other dignitary relations.
So truth be told, Twilight is rotten at anything outside of inter-equestrian politics; any non pony races she’s dealt with she either failed at (Yaks) or someone else handled it.
Connections: its not about qualifications but who you know. was PINKIE tutored and virtually raised by the god princess of the sun? Nooooo?
Well, according to the comics Celestia used to be a real bitch until she eventually mellowed out so maybe Torch was the same?
The latter is pretty much true, to the point where Pinkie of all ponies does a better job at it than her.
I don’t know which outcome is worse.
Spike taking a hit, or Twilight being that bad at friendship/diplomacy.
But feasible. She is known for blowing a gasket during moments she is not prepared for.
Spike is friends with Ember and Thorax. I would think he would willingly invite them over for a hang-out on a whim. However, Twilight is more aware of their titles as “King of the changelings” and “Dragon Lord (Lady)”. Spike would be thinking of just having a hangout with his friends, their status not important to him, but Twilight freaks out and, by proxy, makes Spike freak out, similar to Twilight freaking out during A Royal Problem because Starlight was doing something that she was confident about doing, but Twilight’s freakout made it harder on her.
Of course, they might just go full stupid and make Spike out to be a massive dunce for no reason. Wouldn’t be the first time.
THIS! Torch seemed a pretty reasonable guy in Gauntlet of Fire.
Geez, that would be terrible of her.
I think that will just be Twilight rubbing off on him rather than something she believes.
Probably part of what makes Twilight go bananas and condemn the act of Spike inviting Ember and Thorax to hang out under threat of war between the races and set up Spike to try and keep them apart all day.
