On the flipside, it could turn out even more lewd, given what kind of needs mares have during esturus season. There must be all kinds of feminine products for them to ‘beat the heat’. Would be even more awkward than tampons.

If you tell just about anyone (with the apparent exception of yourself) that two people are ‘lovers’, it will be taken as an implication of a sexual relationship. It didn’t used to mean that so strongly (so you’ll find nonsexual uses of it in older literature), but it’s been used as a euphemism for so long that the connection is now extremely strong. Sort of the same way you can say ‘tool’ with the right emphasis and make middle schoolers giggle. That’s one of the ways that language changes.

But that’s beside the point, because this discussion is the result of you saying that my use of SO implied a more serious relationship than the comic depicts. It’s not. A girlfriend/boyfriend relationship very much falls under the umbrella of ‘significant other’.

It’s not limited to as serious a relationship as you seem to be limiting it to. ‘Girlfriend’ is definitely within the purview of ‘significant other’.

Lover implies a sexual relationship, first and foremost. It also generally implies a passionate fling, often not expected to last. People in a long-term relationship use it with some irony, usually. Someone describing their long-term spouse as their ‘lover’ in all seriousness would be weird.

It also constitutes a fairly direct reference to sex, and could be considered… impolite isn’t quite the right word–let’s say gauche, to use in any social context in which you wouldn’t directly discuss whether two people are bangin’ or not.

That’s how the word is used. It’s a catchall. People invented it to use when they weren’t sure what the status of a relationship was, or to encompass a group with multiple relationship statuses.

Significant Other is a catchall term. It can be applied to casual f-buddies, spouses married for 50 years, and everything in between. In this case, I’m using it because I’m making a statement that I mean to apply regardless of the status of the relationship in question.

Wait, are you saying “significant other” isn’t just a catch-all term meaning whichever of boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse applies?
