As a TMNT fan, I can vouch it’s a huge cash-cow franchise, but I like it regardless. The new Nick show was great, but ironically introduces many one-shot characters just to advertise a toy of ‘em. (Including bringing back or redesigning ones from the ‘90s like Muckman.)  
I think I know whom you’re talking about. One also lauded “How to Train Your Dragon 2” as one of the best movies ever, and such despite how heavily commercialized it was too. (Though, personally, I couldn’t get into that movie/series.)
 
I mean if people are going to pull the whole “anti-capitalism/anti-commercialism” schtick as an excuse to hate MLP, they could at least be consistent with other shows, rather then hold double standards.  
It’s like people who complain about Sonic having “too many characters,” yet are fine with all the newer Mario ones. (In fact, they even added Princess Daisy to “Super Mario Run” as a playable character.)

I believe there was one critic who I shall not speak his name who became an anti brony after season three but yet loved shows like the recent TMNT cartoon

Yeah, we haven’t had much sense the “Rainbow Power” gimmick years ago. (The complaints over that are rather ironic in hindsight, as they were only onscreen briefly. Some oddly believed they would be permanent redesigns, yet I always assumed they’d be brief like the “Crystal pony” forms.) So I don’t get why some still demonize the show over that…
 
Especially, by those that enjoy much more heavily-merchandised franchises.

Indeed, that’s why it’s ironic back during the big Season 3 drama year, (which lead to many bronies “leaving the fandom/show foreverz”) many left the show for it “becoming a toy commercial,” when they forget that’s what it always was.  
(And disregard other good shows like TMNT were, and such were as well.)
