BP #E00D Here. That’s exactly what Starlight needed. All the time Starlight was told to “Complete this Quest.” She barely ever goes on her own personal quest. It seems like she’s content where she is, and is unmotivated to move forward. That isn’t even remotely good for her character, because she’s still got a lot of things to fix.

But then again, she doesn’t need to work, doesn’t need a job, she’s already got a room in the castle for FREE, and she always gets away with doing crazy things with minimum damage, SOMEHOW. Why even bother changing? she’s got everything covered!

Well, I think judging by Sunburst’s interactions with the others, I think he was just using Starlight because of her connections with her friends.

So that means that Sunburst is one of her ‘personal’ somethings, after this episode at least. I could’ve thought she’d gotten over him, well its nice to know that he’s still very much important to him

AJ has a farm and family traditions to uphold. She also has a lot more going on compared to Starlight because AJ has family. Her sister, brother and grandma can be a source of personal conflict for the character. If you can place personal conflict for a character, then you can drive their motives with fears instead of desires.

Starlight’s personal fear of losing Sunburst causes her motivation to desire not to lose him. Most of the time, she has nothing personal like this. She just does what Twilight’s lessons tell her or the map tells her to go somewhere to solve someone else’s problems. Then there’s Pinkie, Thorax or even Trixie who basically have personal conflicts of their own and Starlight just helps them out. “Personal” things was what Starlight badly needed.

Well, Applejack never really had any desires. She was always just happy with her life. I feel like Starlight’s character is kind of similar. She’s pretty much OK with where she is.

That said, I get the feeling the writers DO have something planned for her. Like her character is building up to a greater role but that role just isn’t clear as of yet. IDK, call it a hunch.

She’s finally a real character with hopes and dreams and desires of her own instead of being molded after character archtypes before her.

^this. I hope people didn’t forget that the Mane6 (in season 1) were modeled after common tropes and archetypes. But The reason why the Mane6 was so beloved even early in the series, was because they had hopes, dreams and desire of their own, and through their struggles to achieve them, they broke out of their archetypes.

Season 1 finale was the least epic, but for me it’s still one of the best finale of the series because it’s a display of their dedication (and obsession) to their goals and hopes. The episode Uncommon Bond is similar because it finally shows that Starlight has a goal to work towards, and that she isn’t willing to just give it up. It’s a refreshing change from the usual “Starlight is given a task by someone, does something unpredictable, and she or someone else has to fix it.”

It’s interesting that, in episodes where she plays an important role, she rarely takes the initiative to start the plot. Starlight, unlike the mane6 (even the season1 mane6), has no ‘job’, no ‘career’ and no goals. She at least NEEDS a goal, if her character is to be developed further.

The question “What does Starlight DO?” or “What does her Cutie Mark mean?” or even “What does she want?” do not have a clear answer. She at least needs those questions answered, otherwise she’s not going anywhere.

But where will her obsession be going? i wonder what the writers are planning to do with her, there’s still so much mystery in her, I hope they’ll someday delve into her past, post sunburst leaving. I doubt her affection for him is an all out obsession, but at least they both seem to prioritize each other the most which I thought was pretty sweet

What’s the fun in that? She actually had 3 crazy moments with. The mirror pool was the only one they didn’t go with and it was the most yandere suggestion.

Starlight’s obsession with Sunburst gives her a defining and memorable trait. It also gives her something to fight for. It makes you root for her. She’s finally a real character with hopes and dreams and desires of her own instead of being molded after character archtypes before her.

She definitely had some kind of extreme reaction to Sunburst moving away,
leading to all the crazy evil shit she was up to in season 5.
Maybe it wasn’t ‘yandere’ but it was an absolutely crazy behavior and choices.

This episode made it clear that she is still very obsessed with Sunburst though, and always has been.

On the plus side, she has had so much therapy and rehab these past two seasons,
she doesn’t try to do anything horrible again, and never lashes out at Sunburst or Twilight.

Instead, she just tries to cope with her hurt feelings.

This shot is so goddamn hilarious. Glim being cucked, Sunburst spreading his nerdy charm and dorky look, and Twilight geeking out over whatever it was Sunburst said.

So wrong, but very funny.

It was hard to watch seeing Starlight’s face like that. And that part where he closed the door on her. Wtf? That was nuts. I can watch Chrysalis throw Starlight around and slam her on walls but I couldn’t stand seeing her sad because Sunburst wasn’t paying attention to her.
