RealityCheck wrote his own sequels (“Nyx’s family”, “Nyx and Nightmare Night” and etc.) not related to even “Winter Bells”. Pen Stroke wrote “Winter Bells” and some shit after that which I as huge fan of “Past Sins” simply dropped because it was nothing but stupid Hasbro advertisment.
Practically even “Winter Bells” was pointless because the conflict between Nyx and Shining Armor (Who will just disappear from her life till next “pony X-mas” unlike Granny Smith and other ponyvillians who don’t like her. And yes Shining is so stupid and useless character that I’ve no empathy for him) is not a thing anybody would care about. And Twilight’s parents predictably accept Nyx without any problems. The only driving force for the story is a journalist tring to get proves that NMM is not in jail. The only way to continue “Past Sins” was to skip 10-15 years and work with young adult alicorness. In fact I doubt that Pen Stroke write “Past Sins” itself. He never demonstrated so high level in story composition in his other works. I guess the story was developed by his co-author and he wrote local scenes somethibg he can do perfectly.

I think the rewrite was my first and only version of Past Sins. I had noticed a rewrite so I never looked at the first version. I could be mistaken.
Mostly I liked the CMC interaction. Last I recall, the second half became increasingly…sappy. And Spell Nexus was annoying.
I think the 2nd part is where the story really starts and the character really appears all before that is the exposition. But monsters’ attack is deus ex machena. Looks like the author wants Nyx to be seriously injured in battle while protecting local ponies but can’t find how to do that.
Seeing you say this gave me a flashback to summer 2011 when she beat Fluttershy in a poll and half the fandom went insane. Good times…
I watched MLP for the 1st time in March 2013 and read “Past Sins” in Spring 2014.
Fandom loves what it was told to love. Super Nova of fan-fiction masterpiece wouldn’t shine for long. But in fact as a character Nyx is too big to fit into typical brony’s brain.

Have you read the rewrite? It corrects a lot of the complaints made about the second half.
Still like the concept. Execution could’ve been better.
