The thing is, most of these edits I can’t fault. The Pokemon one is dumb. I know the average American kid isn’t going to know enough about japanese culture to understand a rice ball, but they sure ain’t gonna be dumb enough to mistake it for a jelly donut unless they’re REALLY young or don’t know what a donut is.
American TV is too sensitive to have a primetime anime with an openly gay couple.
The shadow realm isn’t that farfetched either. You have shadow GAMES where they appear to generate alternate dimensions. That seems like a shadow realm to me, and if they just died like the japanese version then how did Mai, Bakura, and Joey return? Shoot, unlike the other two Bakura’s body was just straight up eradicated and he still came back.
As to the dragonball one, they’d sooner show the lesbian scouts then nudity and blatantly sexual things, and even if Goku did it out of innocence he still took off a girls underwear while she was sleeping and that girl then flashed an old man. That would never be allowed. Yet they still had to get the dragonball. I think that’s the best they could have done with that scene outside of just skipping it entirely.
I find the afterscene stupidly funny though. Instead of discovering she’s not wearing panties apparently Goku brought in some of the local wildlife and she freaks out over that.
Even with all the censorship the basic thread of it all was still there, but there’s one that just seemed ruined by the edits. I never got into One Piece, but my goodness I’ve heard about the edits thanks to TV tropes. Now THAT’S something that shouldn’t be forgiven. “Surrender, or I’ll spray you with this clearly photoshopped water hose that is definitely not a gun!”
Never let them live it down any of it.
