That’s fair. I definitely was falling short when I made that. I focused too much on body movements. I thought I had been doing better than that recently, but I suppose it’s always a thing to pay attention to.
CrimsonSweep

Really love what you do. I know it’s an old post, but I was looking at your older stuff and found that you made some videos before the comics.
If I had to give out constructive criticism, it would be that they don’t have enough facial expressions: Eyebrows and mouth mostly. I noticed the mouth barely moves for any character, especially when compared to the original. I think you still have that “issue” in the comics, but it is far less noticeable since they aren’t animated and we’re focused on the naughty stuff.

Enjoys making things
The thing that bothers me in this is Sonata Dusk’s facial expression does not change at all… there is a lot of interaction but no facial expressions? its just ‘neutral’ this is too odd. I guess the other thing is the way she brushes her hair at the end, its rather clunky.

I think if I had to pick out one big change to improve the scene dramatically, it’s that the eyebrows don’t move enough.

A buddy of mine saw Kylo Ren take his shirt off in the shower and he said that Kylo Ren had an eight pack. That Kylo Ren was shredded.

Anthros and 3D animations can tip into the uncanny valley at times for some people. I’m actually pretty fine with anthros, 3D animation, and 3D animated anthros. But I think ways to help prevent the uncanny valley from happening is stylization. If you stick to realistic humanoid body proportions, you can end up toeing that line rather easily.

I’ll use human characters as a point for this. Compare the humans in The Polar Express movie compared to the humans in The Incredibles. To me, the humans in The Incredibles are a lot more easier on the eyes because they don’t go into the uncanny valley. They’re stylized to the point they’re pretty much just 3D cartoons as opposed trying to imitate an actual human being to the exact t. (That being said, I honestly enjoyed both The Polar Express book and movie. Watching it each year is a Christmas tradition of mine.)

I think another example, but with anthros, would be Zootopia. Zootopia doesn’t get into the uncanny valley for me because their body proportions are not anything too much like actual humans. Sure they stand upright and have hands but their hands and feet aren’t like human hands and feet.

Also I think when it comes to cartoons and animation, another good way to avoid the valley is to not have small heads. Smaller heads and smaller eyes tend to mess things up in that regard.

But that’s just my two cents on the matter.

Solar Supporter - Fought against the New Lunar Republic rebellion on the side of the Solar Deity (April Fools 2023).

I am human, hear me err.
I’m not familiar with the Equestria Girls movies, and I have no idea where this event occurs in the Rainbow Rocks movie. But, that doesn’t make this any less interesting. In fact, it is interesting, seeing a scene from one the movies recreated with anthros instead of pure humans.

Argh. The hair physics I animated didn’t make it into the final render for some %$#&* reason. I guess I need to re-render. How did I miss that?

I agree with the above. Much of what animation requires is a lifelike feeling to it, and that includes making the movement less of a jumping sort, but a flowing one. Most of what’s making the animation feel stiff is that there are no snapping motions, like when Adagio spreads her hands out in the original scene right at the beginning. Making a few of the motions quicker and a little bit more of an emphasis on the character’s positions (Especially the balance of their bodies) at the end of the motions would definitely make it seem more lifelike. Looking at how actual people move around would help a lot.

@Stellarator

For me, its the movement. The way their bodies move and shift is completely off (for humans). Its like they’re starting and stopping and starting again like they’re overly stiff actors instead of casually shifting from one movement to another.
