That reminds me of a very epic, and kind of sad, fanfic where a good-intentioned Twilight seemingly goes increasingly dark-side. After pretty much ending the world, it turns out her plan would restore it in the end as well as accomplishing her goal. The new world, specifically the world as seen in the show, has its own Twilight who never did any of that. The Twilight we’ve been following, by now dying, confesses her actions to one character before removing her memory of that meeting, and dies with no one knowing what that stranger who looks sorta light Twilight did for/to them all.
 
With Starlight, I could see if restoring the timeline either required using more repeated table-enhanced time magic than her body could take, or got her wounded somewhere along the way, and she’d see Sunburst one last time and say something that would help him keep ‘his’ Starlight from taking a dark path later. He’d never know she was Starlight’s future self, and Starlight would never know if it worked.
 
Though, no need to make everything dark. No reason she can’t just be giving him an innocent kiss goodbye before leaving after something like the The Cutie Re-Mark.

I could actually see an alternate version of Cutie Remark now where after an infinity of fighting Twilight over and over in Cloudsdale, Starlight collapses from sheer tiredness and crawls back to her old village in the past so she can see young Sunburst one last time before keeling over.
