I think what makes it great (for me) is that the writing was way better than the final result. The gorn was meant to be a truly great threat, not only much stronger than Kirk, but just as smart and resourceful, being one step ahead of Kirk all the way, setting up traps, stockpiling weapons, even intercepting his communications, AND forcing him to reconsider the righteousness of his cause, while for most of the fight Kirk had nothing but injuries to show for his troubles.
And hammy or not, the dialogue still gives me chills. “I weary of the chase. Wait for me. I will be merciful, and quick!”
But yeah, strong writing could not save this fight when your budget is tighter than Vampira’s corset.

It has to be seen to be believed – for the absurdity, unintentional hilarity, and/or non-plausibility (even in science fiction). One of those types of things, plus “it’s Captain Kirk fighting a goddamn lizard, man!”

Which? The Star Trek one or the MLP one?
For Trek I think it’s mostly an example of how ham-fisted the show could be at times, and the low production values not doing it any favors. There are B-movies with better confrontation scenes than this particular one (although the resolution at the end deserves recognition for standing apart from the rest of the episode).
“There Trixie was, holed up in a quarry, when the Gorn starts snooping around. He was getting closer, closer …”
“And?”
“AND TRIXIE THREW A ROCK AT HIM!”

Gorn disapproves
IT reminds me of Kikaida.
I love this scene it is the first time I saw Trixie using her magic to protect her friends (“magic” tricks do not count)

“So Pharynx, what became of the bamboo cannon?”
“They actually let Starlight keep it!”
It was a big rock!
