I think it’s very fair to say no one gives a damn about MLP until G4. Generation 3.5 and lower honestly don’t matter. G4 might as well be Transformers G1 in terms of popularity.
 
You’re right though, Transformers has many generations of the same characters, but they stay the same characters. Optimus is still the leader of the Autobots, Starscream is still a cunning villain (though Armada Starscream is best) but essentially the characters we grew up with stay the same way, even if they go through different things. I don’t trust the staff writers, whoever they may end up being, to do a good job writing G5 with rehashed characters we already had established. It stinks of a crappy reboot cash grab attempt. G4 only worked because Faust started it off, and there isn’t anyone I can think of who could start G5 with the same skill as her.

I think the feeling stems from how most of the G4 fans, such as myself, only started watching MLP in G4, and didn’t care much for the previous generations. Thus, they/we don’t think about names being transferred from the past generations to this one, unlike the Transformers fans who have been through this so many times it’s essentially normal.
