Of course, Nyx bears no resemblance to Nightmare Moon (except for her eyes and fur); no-one said she had to. She’s basically a reincarnation of Nightmare Moon.
 
Also, it’s not so much that Russ shows up in FiM (as in, the show), as it is that he starts showing up in Equestria.
 
As for Russ and Nyx being put into a relationship with each other…personally, I couldn’t care less. It doesn’t really seem to have any real significance in the story of the MLP Time Loops other than story-progression, world-building (…or universe-building…multiverse-building… I dunno; whatever…) and as an excuse for Twilight to go Mama Bear.
 
As far as shipping in MLP Time Loops is concerned, aside from 2 definites, and 1 unadvisable possible (Discord/Berry Punch), it’s mostly nonexistent.

There’s a collaborative writing project called The Infinite Loops. You might have seen this on FIMFic if you browse there https://www.fimfiction.net/story/98568/mlp-time-loops. In fact, I contributed to it for a time and one of my contributions is in the compilation, number 187.2 specifically. The basic concept is that various fictional characters get stuck in time loops (usually spanning from the start of their story to the end) because the multiverse is broken. Also crossovers and strange universal variances happen because reasons, and most characters become very bored and very overpowered due to the fact that the time loops has been happening for a really fucking long time, and you can take things between loops. It’s mostly just dumb fun. Like “primary school kids playing imagination games” dumb, where practically anything goes if you can justify it or it’s funny enough. However, there is a very hard “no OCs” rule for a wide variety of reasons, which has thus far (to my knowledge) been broken exactly once.

It was justified at the time as “it’s not an OC, it’s Nightmare Moon who is totally a different character from Luna” but let’s be honest, Nyx is an OC in every way that counts.
 
Now, I could have just let this go. I could ignore Nyx for the most part because she’s a fucking boring character. You could literally swap her out with Luna (in cases where it’s actually acknowledged that she’s supposedly Nightmare Moon, which she bears no resemblance to) or any other filly character (in all other cases), and it would basically make no difference to any story.
 
But then the shippers decided to go full retard. Oh, it’s even worse than whatever you’re imagining right now.
 
See, remember how I said that crossovers can happen? Well I have two words and a number for you:

40,000
 
So we basically have to take multiple steps of retardation to arrive at the fucking stupid singularity.
 
Step 1: Fluttershy shows up in WH40k. Sure.
 
Step 2: Fluttershy ends up adopting a young Leman Russ and Space Wolves. Somewhat contrived but we can roll with it, dumber things have happened.
 
Step 3: Russ starts showing up in FIM. Again, this isn’t too stupid yet, although it’s not actually very interesting, to be honest. There isn’t really much of a good reason for him to be there.
 
Step 4: Russ and Nyx get shipped. No. You did not read that incorrectly. LEMAN RUSS. FROM WH40K. GETS SHIPPED. WITH AN MLP OC. This is where I start to really question the community that allowed this to happen. But it gets worse.
 
Step 5: There is a ridiculously long, contrived, and badly written wedding. I could barely even start reading it because it was just so cringey. I think that it got abandoned midway through because presumably the author finally came to his fucking senses, but even so, the fact that it exists in partial form is bad enough.
 
So yeah, that’s why I hate Nyx even more than most of the rest of the fandom. Sorry for the wall of autistic text but sometimes it’s something I have to do.

For serious, Nyx had a decent character arc that was good enough for one fic. And then the sequels came out and they all sucked. And then she took a shit on TIL, and please do not fucking ask what that means because I will go fucking nerdrage.
