I know this an old topic but I wonder what could they NEVER be allowed to reference in any form.
 
I mean if they could slip in those cameos then I wonder if even GTA characters could’ve appeared in the background with ease.
 
Imagine CJ, Ryder, Sweet, and Smoke in pony form ordering hay-burgers as an Easter egg.

You’d think more mature shows wouldn’t reference the fans of an unrelated show purely for comedic relief, but they do.
 
The developers and producers of MLP are adults as well. I listened to one of the writers literally sing about her vagina at this year’s Toasty Writers. Most silly, terrible thing I’ve ever heard, and it was fantastic. These people are just that; people. The only thing we can grab from this is that one of the artists put Rick and Morty in the show as a reference, because they also enjoy that show.
 
But if you want to assume that mature never mixes with light-hearted, well, do whatever you want, man.
