I still personally liked the idea that both sunburst and trixie went in first so both of them are a year or two above twilight, then eventually both of them flunked out. usually juniors never really remember/know/meet their upperclassmen, that would explain why Twilight never casually mentions that they all went to school together.
There’s a gulf of difference between your study buddies and that one pony in your telekinesis class whose name you heard a few times in roll call but never talked to.

If you showed me all the people I went to grade school with as adults, I probably wouldn’t recognize half of them.
Different grades, different classes, plenty of potential explanations.
Twilight forgot many things at that school, like her closest friends.
Comics have always been canon, that scene in particular isn’t. Hasbro said that Trixie and Twilight shouldn’t be in the same comics at that time, also it postulates a plot hole. How can Twilight did not recognize Trixie in boast busters if they even went in the same school?
The comics are now cannon and so is the movie. Things from the movie have been mentioned in season 8 and the comics and show were running hoof in hoof for a bit. Mostly with the Pillars of Equestria. The comics were filling in info from between episodes.
The latter of the two works nicely, since it does make the most sense (plus, the Beauty portion can work as a nickname, since Autumn Beauty is a type of sunflower).
