Yes. I’d rather sweeten it with Nutella than sugar. Just stir in a spoonful or two after the oats are cooked.

Peanut butter topping optional. If you opt for it, use “natural” peanut butter because the regular stuff melts into a runny puddle.

Do Wasps even do anything useful?
@ice1517
Wasps actually do serve a purpose, they keep down the populations of invasive bugs like cockroaches and other nasty things, along with slight pollination on their part. Without them, roach like insects would be more abundant.

well, some wasps hunt spiders. so if you hate spiders thats kind of helpful

Yeah wasps do a minor bit of pollination, it’s just dwarfed severely by the good job bees do. They’re good for some things and bad for others - they’re definitely assholes, but sometimes you need an asshole to do an asshole’s job. There’s virtually no good to really come when they start assassinating bee hives - the only bees that are a problem to local wildlife are Africanized ones. But the thing is wasps have such a wide variety of things they’ll kill and eat that in many instances they’re the ones brutalizing all the other shitheads who are out to ruin your crops.

I can’t find the article now, but I remember once seeing something in the news that a massive orange ranch I think Florida had a severe problem with some kind of beetle that was an invasive species. It came from Chile or something, someplace weird. These beetles served no purpose in the local ecosystem and were thriving by destroying massive amounts of our crops. So whatever company owned this farm decided to double-down and deploy a type of wasp that wasn’t native to the area either, to hunt down and destroy the lil fuckfaces. And it worked. And so far the wasps haven’t hurt the ecosystem from what I could tell.

There are also many types of wasps that are smaller, non-stinging, and actually prey on mites and little larvae instead of beetles or bees or other larger insects. Parasitic wasps are very often used in agricultural areas to do pretty much the same kind of natural pest control.

As for spiders, well, personally I love spiders, and I would be upset to see them taken out by wasps - unless the spider was some kind of poisonous species that posed a threat and needed to be culled down. I let spiders live in my house because they take care of any flies that try to sneak in and then they get nice and fat and just fuck off in the corner where I can’t even get to them so it’s no harm done. Both spiders and wasps could kill pest bugs that would otherwise eat the food we eat in our homes, so they both have that going for them. I’d rather let something live even if it can potentially bite/sting me if it also feeds off of the things that are only interested in /my/ food.

Only a few really aggressive and evil species of wasps will actively hunt you down and attack you for standing around, others will only sting if you upset them. Some kinds of wasps are attracted to sugary things though - so the same kinds of food that would attract a bee might also attract a wasp. So you may have some trouble on your hands there.

Cicada Killer wasps are SCARY as hell when they swarm during a certain season to kill, well, Cicadas. But if you leave them alone and let them do their thing they pose no real threat either. You might see these invaders at a park someday and think it’s a conspiracy to kill you and your family. It’s not - cicada killers don’t care about you unless you pretty much attack them first.

Have you ever eaten a fig before? Those weird things that are technically more of a flower than a fruit? Have you ever been HORRIFIED to find a dead bug inside them? That’s actually quite normal, and it’s a wasp. That’s a fig wasp.

The fig wasps are an interesting story because they’re literally the sole, exclusive and ONLY way this tree can reproduce. The fig wasp and the fig tree share a perfectly mutual interest where one species absolutely WILL DIE without the other.

The reproductive parts of figs are tucked away inside, so wind, bees or other things can’t spread their pollen. The cycle all begins with a male fig, and a little opening that a female fig wasp can squeeze inside of. She loses her wings and antenna when she does this though. The male flower pod things inside the male fig are shaped in just the right way for the wasp to lay her eggs in, so she does just that.

The wasp babies are born inside the fig and live their life cycle there. The males mate with their sisters because, well, they’re a species that really loves incest? The males hatch first so they end up mating with the females before they even hatch too so that’s an extra bit of weird, but it’s what they do. The males then dig an escape route outside the fig, but die in the process, and when the females hatch out, they escape the fig using that tunnel their brothers made, crawling past their dead body and leaving them there.

Most importantly though, THE FEMALE WASPS COLLECT THE POLLEN of the MALE FIG that they were born in, as they leave to continue the process all over again. But here’s the thing - the wasps don’t know if the fig they’re crawling into is a male fig or a female fig. If it’s male, the pregnant wasp gets to lay her eggs and begin the cycle. If the wasp crawls into a female fig, well, she’s shit outta luck. The wasp can’t get back out, and just dies trying to lay her eggs. BUT, the male pollen she collected from her home is delivered to the female fig, and so the fig tree has achieved reproduction. The fig then basically eats the wasp by absorbing it, which, well, is part of what makes figs flavorful for us I guess? The proteins of a bug are absorbed, sometimes a lil crunchy bit of their remains are left. But this is completely non-toxic for us and it doesn’t matter if we eat this. It’s just a gross thought.
