A poor little raider Techno Barbarian of the REDACTED tribe attacking a member of the Adeptus Custodes during the Age of Strife, his allies foolishly warning him about the dangers of the Custodians. (To those wondering why there are explosions in the distance, I wanted to draw a custodian on a jetbike shooting the rubble, but it proved too hard to draw…)

You really need to read up on the Horus Heresy and Unification Wars then, because when the Emperor first appeared and unified Terra, he banned any and all religion because it was feeding Chaos, and he kept Chaos secret from everyone else. While there were some daemons around, he simply told people that they were a type of alien from the warp and not a psychic manifestation of an emotion, and whilst some cultist worshiped these “aliens”, he told the cultists to give up their religion or be killed for being “Religious Psychopaths” and he didn’t use the word Heretic. That word wouldn’t become commonplace until around M35.
But daemons and cultists exist…
It’s the 31st millennium, heresy doesn’t exist yet.
