In the pilot, Twilight viewed the princess simply as her mentor and the pony that raises the Sun and Moon each day. At the end, when she realized Celestia was the pony mentioned in the book, she suddenly started seeing her as an immortal, all-powerful God-Princess that would banish anypony, (even her own sister!) at the first sign of dissent, and thus, has feared her and been her faithful lap dog ever since. This is backed up by the fact that in S1E22 and S2E3, she worries about Celestia banishing either her or her friends for their failures (To the Everfree Forest and to Magic Kindergarten, respectively).

@TheGuyImplous well, for most of Season 1 when Celestia shows up, Twilight is either A> Not bowing because REASONS B> She trying to cover up a mistake, and so she bows, and either Celestia herself or Pinkie bails her out of potential shaming.

I think Twilight was just happy to see her, remember, Celestia had been missing up to that point.

What the fuck ever happened to this reaction? The others bowed to their goddess, but Twilight greeted her as an old friend. This never happened again, and from then on Twilight reacted as if the merest thought of failing Celestia would earn her a bloodied asshole. Jesus, come on.
