Bad captions aside, I’ve always theorized that Old Ponish was a dead, scholarly language like Latin even in Star Swirl’s time, because all of the Pillars had no problem speaking modern Equestrian when they were released from limbo. I considered Star Swirl’s writing in Old Ponish similar to Isaac Newton writing in Latin.
