I had the exact same thought! I’d be surprised if Scorpan’s relationship with Spike was a huge reference to some of us Spike fans who keep complaining about him. I say go ahead and do it, writers! If you can’t laugh at yourself! ;) Someone’s gotta represent us, and maybe WE will learn a thing or two in the process while at the same time seeing our buddy achieve and grow!
You’re quite right. Spike doesn’t reach a threshold where he simply quits getting poo flung at him and put his foot down, he just gets more thrown at him and accepts that it’s somehow HIS fault.
A notable one is Triple Threat. I’ve watched it numerous times and while Spike did make a goof of inviting Thorax and Ember on the same day, Twilight forces Spike to stress out more about it than he should, and both she and Starlight encourage him into the plan of keeping Ember and Thorax apart.
In fact, Spike’s spines don’t start glowing until after TWILIGHT says “We just have to keep them apart for a few more hours. No problem!” Commence spines glowing and the map saying “Nuh uh, you’re gonna knock this off NOW.”
In the rare moments Spike has pitched an attitude, he can come off as downright formidable, though it’s just used as a “sassy Spike” moment and often used as comedy in the long run.
This, this right here.
Spike really needs a strong male role model with strong male representation and I think Scorpan could fit this role perfectly, similar to how the CMC look up to their respective role models, AB and Sweetie looking up their sisters, Scootaloo while not relatives of RD looks up to her and sees her as a sister figure. If not one else, Scorpan should be the one to at least be the one to lift Spike’s spirit and set him on the right direction.
There’s also my problem with Spike is that he’s too accepting and that can be exploited while coming off as a weakness, they say your greatest strength can be your weakness and something similar can be said with Rarity in Rarity Takes Manehattan. While I appreciate Spike’s chivalry and accepting nature, he really needs to limit that otherwise he’ll continue to be walked all over like a doormat. It isn’t fair that Fluttershy had the same problem but doesn’t get as much backlash as the former.
Regardless if you go off of the Momlestia or mamatwilight headcanon, both showcases that Spike has had NO strong male figure in his life. Of course he’d jump at the opportunity to connect with one, but it can be done in a wonderful way that isn’t hamfisted. As I said, Scorpan being incredibly selfless and wanting to do things with and for Spike and basically being the complete reverse of Sludge would be simple enough. Throw in a scene where an “every day buttmonkey” moment happens to Spike and instead of Spike just kinda being forced to brush it off, Scorpan is there to lift his spirits. Maybe even stand up for him when someone tries to take advantage of him.
Yeah. I mean, I guess the idea was supposed to be “everyone is already being a sack of poo to eachother and trying to unwind so an evil clone isn’t much different”, but they didn’t establish everyone being frustrated with life beforehand.
I was kinda like that with the doppelganger episode. These six ponies have been friends for 8 fricking years now and you’re telling me they couldn’t tell something was wrong with one another. If my friend acted against what he’d been throughout his life, I’d be concerned about it, not brush it off…
And honestly, in a series like this, consistency and quality are why people are invested in it in the first place. You throw it out and make it so the series goes nowhere with an unlisted reset-button at the end of every episode so that random writers with no knowledge of the cast can fill in and you lose why anyone liked this series.
Let’s not forget episodes like A Marks for Effort where Spike was still able to fly with no problem, A Matter of Principles where he spent of the time flying with no signs of difficulty, Hearth’s Warming Club, Yakity-Sax and so forth. These arguments where they state that Spike was only able to fly competently when some creature’s in trouble despite we see him fly well even when there’s no danger and when someone he loves or cares about are in trouble, can be easily countered and it’s obvious that Josh’s writing isn’t good especially when it comes to consistency and continuity.
Edited
Spike also flies numerous times inbetween molt down and father knows beast, even using it for casual transport and instead of using a ladder.
Suddenly in FKB, he can’t fly 10 steps without going full kamikaze pilot on everything because of his inability to fly.
@Daneasaur
Yeah, it’s just like when somebody you love is in trouble, you can straight away do something that you can’t do. Like in this case, Spike good at flying when he get his wings for the first time to make the Roc let go of his friends.
To be fair, I think the roc thing was mostly instinct.
I completely agree. He’s show he can’t keep consistency between episodes he himself wrote, what hope does he have of retaining any other consistency through the series.
Yeaaaaah, knowing that we’ve clearly seen Spike fly so well despite just getting his wings to the point that he was able to outmaneuver a Roc and stay airborne while upside but suddenly has a hard time doing so during the beginning of Father Knows Beast despite seeing him flying with no problem in previous episodes is a big continuity error and what makes him look bad.
I don’t think Josh needs help, I think he needs to be replaced.
I’d lean on “bad” due to the fact of… well, this:
He writes the episode where spike gets wings and right after getting wings:
Then, a few episodes later he writes another episode:
Maybe, he just having problem writing an episode. We need to help him.
I don’t think Josh Haber is a bad writer and all, just mediocre.
So in conclusion and to sum this all up, Josh either doesn’t care or he’s just a short sighted moron.
We could always do what was done in A Clockerwork Orange while forcing him to watch all the leadup spike episodes and show how he messed up.
Let’s called Josh Haber and have a little discussion about mlp:fim with the fans. Who knows, maybe he will bring up a best episode. Two head better than one.
or
Hasbro should hired a writer that is a fan of mlp:fim. Just think of it, we have a lot of them that came out better and greater story than the series itself.
or
In Season 10 if there is one, Hasbro should give this special seasons for the mlp:fim fans to write their own episode and hired on tv.

Josh clearly doesn’t look into the past of the characters or what they have been doing or their development. Heck, he doesn’t even pay attention to the consistency of his own episodes or episodes in the same season.
That would be a great episode and a great way to relive Spike and Scorpan’s relationship, and Scorpan should not only make a physical appearance but also be a character that Spike can look up to just how the CMC with Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle looking up to their sisters, Scootaloo looking up to Rainbow Dash, and how Twilight looks up to Celestia and Starswirl.
It’s really sad that even those from the MLP fandom can muster up better ideas than the writers have today, I also agree with Josh Haber it feels like he ruins everything whenever he writes each episode, and it cases the series itself to fall flat.
yeah, i saw T’sK
