How is “a bunch” of this legitimately bad advice? A tiny bit of it is partly debatable, but the overwhelming point is pretty straightforward, especially when explaining the how and why. Even the parts that are debatable, doing everything listed here won’t make thing worse.

Overall, the context is story-based or large comic pages.

Setting strict deadlines for casually-made fan works just creates stress.

A bunch of this is bad advice, though, e.g. setting yourself deadlines is really helpful for getting projects finished and helps with burning out.

>whilst also being considerate of their feelings.
Taking responsibility for someone else’s feelings and reactions is not possible. I think that one should consider making the day better instead of forcing how people should behave towards you. I think people learn only if they want, if someone begin to say that they are responsible for their feelings then you are emotionally manipulating them into changing to your liking. Such methods have disastrous results on people. I hope this can help you understand my point of view.

@Doctor Lost
Don’t most comic artists do that? I can’t even come up with an artist who does the opposite, to be fair. Care to show some example how mouths should be done?

Well- if open criticism is welcomed so long as it’s constructive, I’d like to note something I see a great deal with Pony-Berserker’s comics. It’s the mouths,they’re usually just opened blandly in a “bluh”-like expression. The lips don’t seem to match the tone of what a character is saying, or the sounds their speech is making. I do find the comics fun and entertaining, but… I’m always drawn to how unnatural those mouths are.

My own two cents.

It’s okay to break the rules - and truth to be told sometimes it’s just easier to ignore one or two to get the job done. But it’s still good to know the basics and make informed decisions :)

Just because someone says something rude or in a rude way doesn’t mean it’s false or useless information. In order for a creator to grow, they have to be open-minded and consider all criticism of substance, no matter how hateful it is.

While I am agree with that on some level. But still on the other spectrum, artist work hard on their art, the pain, the energy and the work that they put into it is just well…. “Unimaginable” (maybe not the best word), so it’s natural that artist will just ignore someone saying rude thing, they don’t owe them anything, they don’t think that about the work that artist put on their art, they just think about their own self about criticism. Look I am not against, criticism, I am in fact in courage it. But at least when it come to criticizing other think that the artist is human that have feeling and creating the art is a long processes that need a hard work and dedication. Artist is just a mere human.

Oh yeah, I fully understood you. I was explaining what Pony-Berserker was talking about; he wasn’t saying it’s ok for people to comment rude things. He was talking about the behavior of the artist’s response to the rude critic.

Just because someone says something rude or in a rude way doesn’t mean it’s false or useless information. In order for a creator to grow, they have to be open-minded and consider all criticism of substance, no matter how hateful it is.

If dozens of people rudely insult your character or your artwork and you get almost no good feedback from anyone, there’s probably a reason. Walking around thinking all forms of negativity is useless garbage that can be ignored is an extremely destructive mentality on the growth of a person.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Chopsticks
If it’s about a character then it doesn’t insult anyone real and often is somewhat useful.

When it becomes a rude/hateful comment about the artist I don’t think anything excuses that. I know it happens and most likely will continue, however allowing it seems like a go ahead to be disrespectful.

Freedom of speech I believe works both ways. In the same way someone has the right to tell someone else their work isn’t up to stuff, so to speak, then the author has the right to take issue with the commenter’s tone/attitude if it’s unnecessary.

I don’t want to seem antagonistic or angry but I just to explain my point a bit further.

I don’t know who the Royal Guard pony is, but he looks neat. And I like the fact that even though he’s blind in one eye, he can still see the bad anatomy.

A lot of this is really important, though I think there could be a few things that would be better to say up-front (though maybe I’m thinking in regards to art in general and people who are just beginners). One is organizing text to determine who is speaking first. It annoys me greatly when someone has text on the right side and they’re the first speaker. In English and most Western languages, we start from top left and go down. So we have to restart the reading when we get them wrong.

My first sin in comics was size and spacing. For some reason I struggled with squishing the characters and text into really small spaces.

Also, holy shit someone used the word “myriad” correctly. So many people use that word as a noun, when it’s actually an adjective.

It’s a noun. full (though ideally used in a descriptive noun phrase)

@Anonandon
The only thing I don’t agree with is the brutal honesty.
It’s always a slippery slope of being unnecessarily rude but pretending it’s “critique”.
It’s not unrealistic to tell people that there are flaws in their comic, movie, script etc. whilst also being considerate of their feelings.
Otherwise it tells the “critic” that you can just stomp on someone’s feelings all the time as it’s the only way to get things done. Sometimes the truth is harsh but it shouldn’t be a first response.

What he’s talking about is not shutting off to a comment just because it’s rude. It’s a good idea to try and consider it at least rather than brushing it off as a useless opinion or hate.

I use this discussion in my panel about character design. The idea is to identify the difference between a critique and pointless insulting by the substance in it. If it gets specific or even a little lengthy, then you have something to work with. “Your art sucks” is obviously not helpful.

“Something about that face is ugly and it doesn’t look right,” is a rude comment by way of an adjective “ugly”, but it has merit. The person is communicating that you should probably look in to something structurally incorrect. “The eyes are too dark” on a creepy/disturbed/sleepless character however is an opinion of note, but obviously that’s a stylistic intention.

Luckily for me, I suck at arts of all kinds.

So this is a pleasant read, and I believe it could be applied to writing as well (Of which I suck an infetessimal amount less.)

All reminders that every comic artist needs. I’ve seen way too many comics that don’t follow any of this, and too many artists either too puffed up by faves, or too dejected by insults to be successful.

@Anonandon
There is a level of tact that a good critic will engage in, making sure to talk about both the best and the worst of a fan project of any sort. You want to be able to tell someone that they have things they are doing right, as much as things to improve. And be specific! Nothing worse than a vague “I don’t kinda like it” thing.

(That, and my OC, Hammer Forge, is there.)

These are great.
Also I really like how people defend how Steven Universe doesn’t have consistent modelling with “it’s a stylistic choice.”
