Also, it’s super annoying when the person telling the joke gets offended and upset when others don’t laugh. It just makes the “comedian” look petty and insecure.
 
When people don’t laugh, it very likely means it wasn’t that funny. The key to staying funny is not taking it personally, letting it roll off your back, then trying another joke. If people seem annoyed, just chill for a while and try again some other time.

When you say something horrible, and then claim it was “just a joke” when it plays badly, that’s not a valid defense of what you said. Some people call that “Schrodinger’s Douchebag”, where you decide if a horrible statement is genuine or a joke based on your audience’s reaction, as if it exists in a state of transposition between good faith and bad faith until you resolve it.
 
In law, it’s called a mens rea defense, where you claim you did not have harmful intent when you performed a harmful action. The harm is done, either way, and claiming you “didn’t mean it” is not an excuse.

It depends on how well you tell it. It varies on a case by case basis.
