When people don’t laugh, it very likely means it wasn’t that funny. The key to staying funny is not taking it personally, letting it roll off your back, then trying another joke. If people seem annoyed, just chill for a while and try again some other time.

In law, it’s called a mens rea defense, where you claim you did not have harmful intent when you performed a harmful action. The harm is done, either way, and claiming you “didn’t mean it” is not an excuse.
