Sometimes we just have to make horrible jokes to cope with the crap of reality. As a Californian, I will that this was funny. Messed up, but funny.

Pretty much. It sucks, but it’s what we have to deal with.

As a Californian, I find this funny. The joke only works precisely because the fires are horrible and we all know it.

I’ve heard additionally that the entire region’s ecosystem depends on occasional fires but they banned controlled burnings for the sake of air quality. The place was starving for flame.
 
Really alot of things contributed to this absurd happening.
 
Which makes the reality, however morbid, quite funny.

Death toll’s at 44 and rising, dude– this shit’s not cool.

More to blame is Chapparal (which burns quick and hot and is native to the state), Santa Ana Winds (at least in the Woolsey Fire), and drought than some eucalyptus that may or may not have been transplanted here.

It’s a serious issue, but I don’t think making a little joke about it hurts anything. If anything, it brings people’s attention to it. Sorry if it’s offensive to some people, though.

As someone who is also a liberal, and was evacuated in 2003 by wildfire (Grand Prix Fire, specifically), I know all about how right you are in this regard.
 
Really, firefighters don’t get paid enough as is, and yet republicans slash funding for wildfire prevention, followed by Trump threatening to cut off funding for something that isn’t even our fault? *sigh* There are really no words.

Welcome to the last 17 years, cause wildfire statistics literally weren’t being recorded prior to 2001.
 
California has had a fire issue for decades. Its just that they get worse each year and Republicans have been sabotaging efforts to address the problem. (Remember the budget the Republicans passed last year? They slashed the national firefighting budget, so now they’re underfunded. Hurray! Now watch as I get banned for being a liberal!)
