I’m happy it’s ending, not because I think it’s stale, but because it’s best to go while the goings good. Jerry Seinfield ended his show, not because of poor ratings( far from it) but because he didn’t want it to become stale. Star Trek: The Next Generation ended after 9 seasons and everyone looks back with fond memories, some it not a lot consider it better than the old series!

I’m thrilled they chose to end it this year, because FIM will be in good company!

These are the shows ending in 2019..

MLP: FIM
Game of Thrones
Star vs. The Forces of Evil
The Amazing World of Gumball
The Big Bang Theory
Homeland
The Man in The High Castle
Orange is the New Black
Vikings

And even movie series!

Star Wars Episode IX(the end of the sequel trilogy)
Avengers: Endgame(the end for certain heroes and retirement for others)
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World(I saw a special screening, it made me cry with its wonderful, and heartfelt ending)

So, MLP is ending with great company!

Well. I am glad I take nothing too personal. You see. I know a few things. At the core it is all about the investment versus profit. In the end unsold merch is loss, unsold DVDs are loss. Let’s take for example the 80’s console gaming crash. It didn’t happen because console gaming was worthless, but because many games remained unsold due to poor quality.
In the end even if the profit is small, that small profit makes it a success. Recovery costs matter.
Now of course the tight suits at Hasbro might consider it less profitable than it was in 2012, and I do believe that is why G4 is coming to an end.
You see. When it comes to creative arts, and yes, that includes corporate entertainment such as this, there is a risk of extending too much on a story and ruining it.
Many companies reboot their stories to keep the brand while ending this trend. And that is all right. I would rather see MLP:FIM end in season 9 or 10 (If someone has a change of heart) than see it go down the way The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Pokemon (Anime) went.
Ever since S3 I have been saying each season finale is a valid series finale at this point. But the merch, even the comics or a mini series, could continue whenever Hasbro feels like it.
Why? Because the fandom thrives and buys merch. That is what keeps Star Trek: The Next Generation still profitable even though it is all over.
People will be wanting to have MLP things signed by Tara Strong as much in 2030 as they do now, if not more. After all many admire Patrick Stuart for his work in Star Trek.
I will sound weird. I am happy the ride is going to end, or could end in the foreseeable future, and I doubt it was because of financial failure.
In fact many series have reached their end recently. Regular Show, Adventure Time, Steven Universe. All of them reached their end between 2017 to now. The fact that MLP managed to outlive many shows equally as popular, with many fans, and which are close in chronology to it.
This was a long ride, but it was not meant to go eternally in a terrible way.
It is not as if the end of the series would mean literally killing off our favorite characters.

As a novelist I know one thing. Success is about making an earning past investment costs.

For a major corporation and a big franchise, I think the standards might be different, and it’s not just about did it make a profit, but whether or not they think they’d make more money doing something else. There’s also the question of how much merchandise did it move, since that’s a big part of where money comes from in movies like this, but I don’t think the public usually sees those numbers so I’m not sure how to account for that.

Admittedly, no, I’m not an expert, so with that out of the way.

Okay, fine. It was an emotional response rather than a logical one. Having an official announcement makes everything feel really final and solid in a way that the leaks didn’t, so I’m not feeling great about it right now. And I’m not exactly a big fan of Tempest to begin with, so that didn’t help either.

Not apologizing, just explaining.

Earning expectations mean nothing compared to the budget-earning comparison. A film is only a financial failure if it does not go past the production budget.
Therefore even if the local earnings were 8.9 million, with a production of 6.5 million, that 2.4 million makes it a financial success, even if not a big hit.
As a novelist I know one thing. Success is about making an earning past investment costs.
Considering most people out of the target demographic didn’t watch it or watched it illegally, there’s a chance many actually harmed it without noticing. And there’s a good chance many in the target demographic didn’t watch it on theatres, but out of them.
Film revenue is no longer limited to temporary events. I am certain many parents bought it for home use later on, just like Frozen.
As a Mexican I can tell there was ONE problem with it here. There were no ads. Most of the target demographic didn’t know it was released. I found out because I frequent the web and actually went to the first screening in my city. It was almost empty, and most people there were between 15-30. The target demographic was absent because it was not advertised on T.V. And street ads focused on the live action Equestria Girls shows.

Anyway using your link I found this.
“…worldwide total of $61.3 million on a production budget of $6.5 million.” So you’re still wrong.

It at the very least fell short of expectations: It was expected to make $10-17 million in its opening weekend, and instead made $8.9 million.

Even if taken at face “The target audience liked the movie” is pretty vague. It does not, for example, say how thy feel about the movie when compared to the show, or to Equestria Girls, or to other shows/movies.

As for the rumors? IIRC, nothing had been finalized, and plans can change. If they felt G4 was still strong, they could have easily pushed G5 back another year or two.

Based on the leaked elements of G5, it was planned before releasing the movie and it wasn’t a failure. They probably planned a closure beforehand to prevent seasonal rot upon noticing many people feared it.

Proof that the movie was a commercial failure? Because last I checked they made more money than they put into it. 61.3 million USD to be exact. Further, the target audience liked the movie, and that’s all that matters. And yes it would be, this has been rumored to be the last season for a long time now.

Oh, that’s rich coming from you. If your movie hadn’t been such a critical and commercial failure, would the series even be ending now?

Funny, I kinda go back and forth on this one. Pople’re gunna work through their feelings anyway they have to… maybe some feel the more they expose themselves to an idea like this, or at least think about it, the less icky it gets. These are characters and places a lot of us went through different transitions with – growing up, graduating, ect. Let ‘em feel blue for a bit over this, it causes no harm (though it might be annoying ^^) and they’re just expressing themselves.
