On the other hand, there have been a few instances where, after the cartoon invalidated a comic storyline, the comic later addressed it.
 
On THAT note, Fiendship #1 could still be part of the show’s continuity since nothing in this two-parter contradicted that. It simply made Siege impossible to fit into the show’s continuity.

Honestly I prefer King Sombra from the comic, the comic does a lot more right when you stop and think about it. Sombra had depth, character and reason. If their is one thing I’ve always hated, its when characters are evil for the sake of being evil, with no real reason as to why. I’m infinitely more satisfied with the siege of the crystal empire then this interpretation.

“Canon” is a collected body of work, it means it happened in an official Hasbro-approved release; it’s a part of the FIM franchise. The IDW comics are FIM canon. EqG is FIM canon. The chapter books are FIM canon.
 
All of these things are in different continuities; they’re different self-contained alternate universes that are all based on more or less the same characters and setting, but tell different stories in different ways. The cartoon flatly contradicting the comics or any other medium doesn’t mean those contradicted stories “didn’t happen”, it just means they didn’t happen in the cartoon’s continuity, and since Hasbro owns all of this, it’s still entirely possible that those stories might happen in the cartoon as alternate universes, the same way the Crystal War Timeline and Nightmare Takeover Timeline did.
