Hmmm… I guess you’re right. I suppose it’s just my personal preference to really see the show acknowledge these things, but it’s not really necessary, as I still very much enjoy the show regardless. But yes, tha’s the real problem. The writers can’t seem to make up it’s mind as to the format they want the show to be in.

I have read in an article on EQD, that G5 will have a higher rating to ‘appeal more to a teen audience’. And that it will supposedly have content supporting said rating. Not sure what that sort of rating they would give it, but I do hope that G5 fixes the numerous flaws G4 has.

The show could theoretically work in a more serious format without actually needing to be bumped up to PG or anything like that. That just means they wouldn’t be able to let their characters get into too much peril, or any “serious” danger and no serious sexual implications or other adult references like drugs.

I mean if you look at some of the shit Cozy Glow did, some serious shit actually HAS happened - hence why I don’t think she deserves to be reformed - but the show doesn’t quite….acknowledge how fucked up it was for her to almost kill a bunch of ponies, so the show manages to stay within its ratings. Even though if you really analyze what’s on screen, it’s fucked up sometimes…. Eh, ratings are complicated - but you see what I mean. If they spent time actually showing the audience how REAL the danger was and that a little girl just almost straight up MURDERED a bunch of people, and she was put on trial for attempted pony slaughter, then the show would go up in ratings.

TV is weird sometimes.

Really though, for me, I prefer the show when it’s in its slice-of-life format. You relate to the characters more that way. The problem is that since season 1 the show’s been confused about how serious it wants its lore to be, and it keeps switching between a serious format and a slice of life format.

And those fans are right. Because of the rating and episodic format of the show, the writers are not able to give the premiers and finales the amount of attention they deserve. Most of these stories (Nightmare Moon and King Sombra for example), should have had an entire season dedicated to them. But they didn’t, because of the shows episodic format, and TV-Y rating. Ultimately this show, from Season 4 and on especially, has been trying to pack more lore into it than it can handle. Even the comics (although not canon) can’t go into the depth they really should be, again, I feel, because of the target audience.

This is why the vast majority of Anime use the Arc/Myth Arc format, since that allows for deep, interconnected storytelling. Another thing Anime does that I feel we (the US) should start doing at some point, are OVAs. They would allow either deeper explanation of the lore, or at least the characters and their relationships (if the OVAs’ storyline is unrelated to the main plot). An arc-based MLP would benefit from this greatly.

MLP really is one of those shows that, because of the huge amount of lore, should be done in an Arc based format.
There are so many characters, and areas of Equestria and beyond that haven’t been explored as in-depth as they should be. I think they might, if it were arc-based (with possible OVAs included) rather than episodic. As well as a higher rating (PG maybe?).

This is why many fans say the show shines brightest in the slice-of-life episodes.

If the story can’t work without contrivances, then quite frankly it’d be better to start from scratch than try to polish a turd.

Some of it had to be forced just for the sake of having a story, I think realistically the fact that the elements chose Twilight’s friends was simply because they were, well, her friends, and some facet of them was compatible with these elements. And they chose Twilight and her friends specifically because Celestia probably already selected her in some way to inherit them. Whatever magic was involved probably took hold of the mane six in an attempt to guide and nurture them towards those roles and morals, thus the point of the show. Because if you really think about it, I’m sure there existed people who were already emotionally mature enough to be much better fits for those elements, the basic idea is you need GOOD PEOPLE. Those roles could have been filled by anyone, but they had to be the mane six, who were all relatively new at these roles, so we could experience their progression and development through the course of the series.

When I say it was forced I mean it was SUUUUUUUUUUPER forced. Although I got hooked on the show really quick, even now I still hate the actual first episode and it’s embarrassing to watch even today. The pilot…. it’s actually not so great, if you really look at it. The way they shoe-horn each of these characters into their roles is one of the most forced things I’ve ever seen, even in a cartoon.

Like look at Applejack - she proved she was “a really honest person” by telling someone to LET GO AND DROP OFF THE EDGE OF A CLIFF, without actually explaining that there was no danger because two flying people were about to save her. How the fuck does that make any sense? What was stopping her from just explaining that Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were behind her? Also what was stopping them from grabbing Twilight before she let go? Why did Twilight absolutely HAVE to just let go, having absolutely NO REASON to trust that suggestion? THAT, is some serious shoe-on-head logic.

…or, you know, maybe RD an AJ got their elements switched.

Honestly, the elements don’t really make sense to start with. “Loyalty” and “Friendship” may not necessarily be interchangable, but they’re still too close for one to be considered an element of the other. And wouldn’t generosity just be an aspect of kindness? I know Rarity was originally gonna have the element of inspiration, but then what does that have to do with friendship? Not to mention that laughter is a double edged sword. I’d even go as far as to say that honesty, or at the very least truth itself, is more important than friendship.

It’s almost like they just tried to come up with excuses for why these characters were special enough to wield these almighty artifacts and tie them back to the theme that all of their alleged “educational content” stems from, rather than at least consider what the actual fundamentals of a friendship are and why they are more qualified as such than anything else.

I chalk that up to poor writing. Since the show doesn’t actively acknowledge things like this as questionable behavior, it means it’s unaware of its own self when it comes to things like that. Celestia would only be a bad person if her character is intentionally meant to be written like that. Otherwise, it’s kind of just the writer’s fault for not thinking through their implications, even if they’re not direct.

There are plenty of times I think other characters are….misused from time to time. Like how Rainbow Dash is supposed to be so loyal to her friends but she keeps doing kind of shitty things to her friends, though at least most of the time it’s for some kind of plot reason like she learns a lesson or whatever. Really I always thought Spike would be much more fitting for her role.

Well, that was the first time that we’ve seen Celestia’s evil side so that still counts.

And besides even if Celestia does go evil in real equestria, odds are her evil form will look exactly like the one in Starlight’s dream so Hasbro kind of slipped up there and already ruined the surprise for us.

I won’t be surprised if Daybreaker returns in real equestria and looks exactly like her dream form.
Pepper01

This would be the best if it totally happened. Twilight’s last and final test from her mentor, is to defeat her in Mortal Combat to the death and then and only then will she truly gain the title of Ruler of Equestria.

In was thinking the other day, do you think that since Grogarvis the king of monsters. That he was the one who created celestia and Luna and placed the dark magic inside of them hoping to turn them into nightmare moon and daybreaker
