They could have easily declined the bet and just had a simple competition, but they went ahead with it. It was goading- or “flimflamming,” rather- an old woman into doing something she didn’t have to do at all.

They seemed to take joy in goading an old woman into betting away her farm/home, when all she had to do was decline their offer and make them take their machine somewhere else. That’s still pretty messed up, even if it’s technically legal.

The point was that they weren’t originally villains or scam artists. In their first appearance they had a legitimate product that could be produced faster with no loss of quality. It was the Apple family’s own fault that they have no ability in negotiation.

Reminder they did literally nothing wrong. Their original product was of equal quality to apple family cider and only lowered quality in a panic when they let like, 10 ponies work against their one machine.
