The first bit of character I felt he gained was dating Yona.
Ironically, all of them are liked quite a bit with the exception of Sandbar. He ranks the lowest of the student 6.

Oh, you’re one of those ponies. A trap.
Especially when he was able to pull a trick on Neighsay last season that we seldom see other character doing… I actually think Sandbar is the kind of character who is pretty smart inside, but is just so easygoing that he looks slow (and worries the most on not able to choose a cupcake out of two dozens).
Not so much “token” pony as “background” pony. Sandbar is there to remind the audience that ponies are the norm, the rest of the Student Six are the exceptions. So he kind of has to be bland and generic. Actually, I think it’s funny how the writers run with that and make him the most boring, white-bread pony imaginable.
Still no excuse for him holding the Idiot Ball this episode, though.
