“ADHD was first mentioned in 1902. British pediatrician Sir George Still described “an abnormal defect of moral control in children.” He found that some affected children could not control their behavior the way a typical child would, but they were still intelligent.”

“In 1887, a German ophthalmologist, Rudolf Berlin, was the first to use the word ‘dyslexia’ in place of word blindness. The condition was described as ‘dyslexia’, from the Greek meaning ‘difficulty with words’.”

“Asperger’s syndrome (also known as Asperger’s Disorder) was first described in the 1940s by Viennese pediatrician Hans Asperger, who observed autism-like behaviors and difficulties with social and communication skills in boys who had normal intelligence and language development.”

To put it frankly, you’re knowledge of psychology/psychiatry/whatever field deals with developmental disorders is grossly closed-minded and obsolete. Have you ever considered that doctors don’t just pull the diagnosis out of their ass? A good doctor comes up with a hypothesis based on observations of their patients, studies and tests groups of patients to figure out common patterns, and comes to conclusion based on the results. When their findings are legitimized and recognized as an actual disability, other doctors will then diagnose their patients in accordance with the established documentation. Y’know, the SCIENTIFIC METHOD AT WORK!
Yes, a lot of people make false self-diagnosis as an excuse to be a jerk, and some doctors make false alarm diagnoses, but as TV Tropes put it: “If every condition which had those didn’t actually exist, we wouldn’t need doctors.”
I apologize if I’m late to the discussion – and by five years, no less – I just tend to get really up in arms over ignorance like this. This isn’t the 1950s anymore. You live in a society where not only are psychologists discovering reasons as to why certain people don’t seem quite in step with the rest of the world, but where you can actually do research into the topic at your own leisure and find out why so yourself! To remain ignorant about such matters for so long, in an information-driven society such as our own, is inexcusable!
If you’re not a troll, then this makes me worry. In either case, a counterargument won’t do much for you. You’ll be right in your mind regardless of what we say.
Objectively, there are a lot of people with Asperger’s here. Of course, a tweet from the Brony Queen herself is bound to draw those who have Asperger’s to comment, so this may be sample that isn’t representative of Derpibooru’s population.
But I’m not sure if I’ve ever run across this many people with Asperger’s IRL up to this point. I know of two, and I suspected another. And even with a skew, I recognize a lot of these usernames as being active members here. Heck, in my circles on KYM, there are a lot of people with Asperger’s.
…Do we just have a lot of people with Asperger’s on Derpibooru/in the fandom or something? More than the general population? And why is that, if that’s the case?
Actually, I think it’s a Web Culture thing. People who are socially awkward (associated with those with Asperger’s) aren’t going to go out and hang with friends at night or over the weekend as much as those who grasp social interaction better than most.
So those who stay at home tend to be those who, for various reasons, choose to not go out. Sometimes it’s due to being a homebody. I believe it’s more structural: those who don’t have many good people to go out with go online instead and join communities with odd interests.
For example, ponei.
What are you a Scientologist?
Science lies every single time if there is a chance to grab some easy money. Be it the great global warming blunder or a set of fake mental disorders that oddly often meld with personality traits.
That’s a golden buisness model right there.
You research and treat a disease that’s not even there. Better yet make people believe they are sick and rack up the research grants.
That’s the way Scientology works right down to the drones defending the structure despite having no real benefit from it (other than having to pay the higher ups).
@Mayojar77
Oh i’m not saying mental disorders are all fake. In fact i have a guy who can’t talk (he just lets out off grunts) in the family but otherwise he’s quite clear on the thinking side.
Then one of my friends has a younger brother with the same symptoms.
I’m just against coining on disorders on people who would otherwise be fully functional.
What annoys me are disorders pulled out of someones arse.
I got diagnosed with dyslexia as a kid and yet i can write in english (and english is NOT my native language) without making typos in every odd word. And the teacher never cut me slack during dictation excersises either.
Then i got diagnosed with “depression” and got a prescription for the “Life tablets” as the psychologist affectionately named them.
Upon closer inspection those turn out to be motherintercoursing prozac under a different name. Didn’t take them and never went to that psychologist hack ever again.
2 years have passed and i’m well and alive without any suicide attempts under my belt.
According to this, coming from what’s basically the Bible for American Psych professsionals, Asperger’s has been folded into the general “autism” umbrella.
I think you mean ‘affect’@Sonlirain
Hey, Sonralin, I feel like I should point out that mental disorders are a real thing. It’s not about opinion. It’s about scientific fact. And I know this because I have Aspergers.
So do I, but I only bring it up when people are getting offended on my behalf.
I’ll be offended if I want to, not when you say I should, dammit!
Trust me, I’d know.
Yes, if your “opinion” is based not on a deep understanding of the subject and personal experience but rather just a gut a reaction to something that is only informed by personal impetus it should, indeed, be held much lower that that of one who’s opinion is well informed and knowledgeable.
But then, aspergers or any other disease isn’t a matter of opinion. It’s a matter of observable behaviors and patterns of behaviors compared with others to form a meaningful conclusion about one’s mental state. It’s not a question of whether or not vanilla or chocolate ice cream is more delicious. It is not about “opinion.”
Because having a different opinion requires you to be an expert in the field.
@gg666
The research quality that concluded that global warming is progressing so fast while placing the temperature measuring aparatuses next to metal walls highways and virtually every single other place that can tip the results in the one desired way?
Anyway since i’m alone against probably everyone on this site on this case i submit.
I feel you there, dude.
It’s people like you that undermine the efforts of people with legitimate developmental disorders by trivializing it as a case of bad parenting or what have you.
Pardon us for not being able to grasp things as easily as the average person. Pardon us for being wired differently.
