To be fair, G3 deconstructed the whole idea. Wysteria couldn’t handle the restricted lifestyle princesses have interfering with who she was, and what she did with her friends, so at her coronation she declared everyone in Ponyville to be a princess.
 
The movie even pointed out that she didn’t earn the title—all she did was happen to touch a magic flower. Anyone else could’ve been named Princess in her stead, and it implied that if she had earned the title rather than having it thrust on her things might not have gone so sour.
 
It’s also a nice contrast with G3 Rarity, who had actual responsibilites and power as a princess (and was selected from among other young pink unicorns, apparently), but she just wanted to have fun and shirked her duties.

^ It basically relies on this old sexist “Every girl wants to be a princess!” which is one of the thing Lauren hated about most girls shows…

And to think that just few months ago I would laught at this and think how FiM is better than that…
